Description


Exhibits a striking and slender wing morphology with a wingspan ranging from 86 to 92 millimeters. The dorsal surface of the wings displays a vivid bright orange coloration, deeply intersected by thick, bold black bands that run horizontally, creating a highly visible pattern during flight. Conversely, the ventral side of the wings is far more subdued, featuring a combination of pale brown, beige, and soft orange tones, mottled with dark and silvery markings that provide exceptional crypsis, mimicking dead leaves when the insect rests with its wings folded upright. A subtle sexual dimorphism is present; males typically showcase a more intense, fiery orange hue and sharper black markings compared to females, which tend to have a slightly duller coloration and more rounded wing margins.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a vast geographic range throughout the Neotropics, extending from the southern border of the United States (as an occasional stray in southern Texas and Florida) and throughout Mexico, continuing southward across Central America into major regions of South America, including Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, and extensively across Brazil.

Habitat: Primarily frequents lowland tropical rainforests, forest edges, secondary growth woodlands, humid savannas, open clearings, riverbanks, and anthropogenically disturbed areas such as pastures, suburban gardens, and agricultural plantations. It is most commonly encountered at low to moderate elevations, ranging from sea level up to approximately 1,200 meters above sea level, favoring warm, sunny microclimates with high ambient humidity.

Feeding: During its larval stage, it is a highly specialized herbivore that feeds exclusively on the foliage of passion vines within the Passifloraceae family, particularly targeting species of the genus Passiflora such as Passiflora biflora and Passiflora auriculata. As adults, they derive metabolic energy from the nectar of various flowering plants, with a preference for genera like Lantana, Stachytarpheta, Croton, and Casearia. Additionally, males are frequently observed engaging in mud-puddling, gathering vital sodium, minerals, and moisture from damp soil, animal urine, or bird droppings.

Behavior: Characterized by its rapid, agile, and direct flight pattern, showing a strong preference for active movement during peak hours of direct sunlight. Males exhibit pronounced territorial behavior, actively patrolling forest clearings, edges, and pathways to seek out receptive females or drive away potential rivals. By sequestering cyanogenic glycosides from their larval host plants, these butterflies accumulate toxic chemical compounds in their tissues, making them highly unpalatable to natural predators such as insectivorous birds and reptiles, a defense mechanism advertised by their vibrant warning coloration.

Reproduction: Begins with an intricate aerial courtship display in which the male flutters persistently around the female. Following successful copulation, the female deposits her pale yellow, cone-shaped eggs singly or in small clusters directly onto the tender new shoots, tendrils, or the undersides of Passiflora leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae emerge as dark-bodied caterpillars adorned with numerous branching, venomous-looking black and purplish spines that deter potential predators. The mature caterpillar eventually forms a mottled brown and gray chrysalis that brilliantly mimics a dry, shriveled leaf, remaining in this pupal stage for roughly two weeks before emerging as a winged adult.

Conservation status: Has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List and currently holds no global threat classification. It is generally regarded as a common, resilient, and widespread species that adapts well to modified landscapes, provided that adequate populations of its larval host plants remain intact, though localized populations may experience declines due to intensive deforestation and pesticide application.
