The ventral wing surface of both sexes is remarkably different, featuring pearly grey, silver, and pale brown hues that mimic dead leaves, providing excellent camouflage when resting with closed wings.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits the understory and canopy of primary and secondary tropical rainforests, as well as gallery forests and wooded areas adjacent to riparian corridors. It is most frequently encountered at elevations ranging from sea level up to 1200 meters. The species prefers highly humid environments, forested ravines, and natural forest gaps where sunlight penetrates to the forest floor, creating microclimates necessary for thermal regulation and active flight.
Feeding: Unlike many other lepidopterans, adults of this species rarely visit flowers to feed on nectar. Instead, they obtain vital nutrients, mineral salts, and essential amino acids by feeding on decomposing fruits, decaying organic matter, animal dung, and carrion. Males are frequently observed congregating on damp sand or mud along riverbanks and forest trails, engaging in a specialized behavior known as mud-puddling. The larvae, conversely, are strictly herbivorous and highly specialized, feeding exclusively on the foliage of trees within the family Ulmaceae, displaying a strong preference for the genus Celtis, especially Celtis iguanaea.
Behavior: Characterized by an exceptionally rapid, powerful, and erratic flight style, spending most of its life cycle in the upper forest canopy. Males exhibit strong territoriality, engaging in hilltopping behavior by perching on elevated foliage or ridges to defend territories and search for potential mates. They are strictly diurnal insects, showing peak activity during the warmest hours of the day, typically between midday and early afternoon, when solar radiation optimizes their flight temperature and highlights their warning or mating coloration.
Reproduction: Begins with complex aerial courtship sequences initiated by territorial males. Following successful mating, the female searches for suitable host plants of the genus Celtis to oviposit. Eggs are laid singly and meticulously on the underside of young leaves, ensuring immediate food resources for the hatching larvae. The early-stage caterpillars are bright green, providing excellent camouflage, and develop distinctive bifid head horns and a forked tail structure characteristic of the subfamily Apaturinae. Upon reaching maturity, the larva undergoes pupation, forming a green, leaf-like chrysalis suspended from twigs, which remains dormant for about two weeks before the adult butterfly emerges.
Conservation status: Is not currently evaluated globally by the IUCN Red List, meaning it does not hold an official threatened status, and its populations are considered locally stable. Nevertheless, its long-term survival is deeply dependent on the preservation of pristine forest ecosystems. Accelerated deforestation, habitat fragmentation driven by agricultural expansion, and the heavy use of pesticides represent major threats to its survival, as these activities eliminate crucial larval host plants and alter the delicate humid microclimates required by adults.
