This is a remarkably dimorphic nymphalid butterfly that showcases some of the most striking coloration in the Neotropics. Males feature a wingspan ranging from 55 to 65 millimeters and are instantly recognizable by a brilliant, metallic turquoise-blue or green iridescent band running across the dorsal surface of both the forewings and hindwings. This vivid coloration is structural, shifting in hue depending on the angle of light, set against a deep dark brown or black background. In stark contrast, females are slightly larger and lack this metallic iridescence entirely, displaying a Batesian mimicry pattern that closely resembles butterflies of the genus Adelpha. They exhibit a prominent white or cream-colored postdiscal band over a dull brown background. The ventral side of both sexes is highly cryptic, blending light brown, pearly grey, and silver tones that perfectly mimic dead leaves, providing excellent camouflage when resting with closed wings.
It is widely distributed across the Neotropical region. Its geographical range extends from southern Mexico and through Central America (including nations like Costa Rica and Panama) down into large portions of South America. It can be found throughout Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, northern Argentina, and extensive regions of Brazil, particularly in the Atlantic Forest and the Amazon Basin.
Geographical distribution: This species primarily inhabits humid tropical rainforests, subtropical deciduous forests, gallery forests, and secondary forest borders. It is typically restricted to elevations ranging from sea level up to approximately 1000 to 1200 meters. It is frequently encountered along riparian corridors, forest trails, and sunlit clearings where solar radiation warms the damp ground.
Habitat: Adults are non-nectarivorous and rely on saprophagy to meet their nutritional needs. They feed predominantly on rotting fruits, animal dung, decaying organic matter, tree sap, and dissolved minerals extracted from wet soil or mud-puddling sites. The caterpillars are strictly phytophagous, feeding on the foliage of host plants within the Ulmaceae and Celtidaceae families, with a strong preference for Trema micrantha and various species of the genus Celtis.
Feeding: It exhibits a rapid, erratic, and powerful flight pattern. Males are highly territorial and frequently perch on sunlit leaves in the upper canopy or along forest edges to survey their territory, aggressively chasing away intruders and pursuing passing females. Females are much more elusive, spending the majority of their time in the forest canopy and only descending to lower strata to search for oviposition sites. During the hottest hours of the day, males regularly congregate on damp sand or mud to engage in puddling behavior, absorbing essential mineral salts required for reproduction.
Behavior: The life cycle of this insect is holometabolous, progressing through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. After mating, the female deposits her eggs individually on the underside of host plant leaves, particularly on the fresh foliage of Trema micrantha. The larvae are bright green, tapered at the posterior end, and bear distinct horn-like projections on their heads, giving them a slug-like appearance that blends seamlessly with the host plant leaves. The pupa is pale green and laterally compressed, hanging from the branches of the host plant to mimic a leaf and avoid predation until emergence.
Reproduction: It has not been formally evaluated globally by the IUCN Red List. However, local populations face localized threats due to habitat fragmentation, deforestation, and the loss of larval host plants driven by agricultural expansion and urbanization throughout its native range.
Conservation status: The presence of this species is highly tied to the health of mature forest ecosystems, making it a valuable bioindicator for monitoring habitat quality.
