Represents a medium-sized hemipteran taxon characterized by its remarkable acoustic abilities and highly mimetic coloration. The taxon Dorisiana drewseni presents a body length of approximately 28 to 35 millimeters and a wingspan that can easily reach up to 90 millimeters. The body exhibits variegated color patterns ranging from olive green to light brown and ocher, which provides exceptional camouflage when perched on the bark of its host plants. Its head is broad, featuring large compound eyes located laterally and three ocelli arranged in a triangle on the vertex. The forewings, or tegmina, are completely transparent and hyaline, with a robust venation system colored greenish-brown that becomes darker towards the apical margins. Males possess a highly developed acoustic apparatus at the base of the abdomen, protected by well-developed opercula that cover the tymbal cavities.
Geographical distribution: This insect is widely distributed across the southern region of South America, with documented and abundant populations in Brazil (predominantly in the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Goiás), northern regions of Argentina, and various forested areas of Paraguay.
Habitat: Primarily inhabits the Cerrado biome and its transition zones into the Atlantic Forest. It is highly adaptable, successfully occupying pristine primary forests, secondary shrubby woodlands, agricultural zones with scattered trees, and even urban parks containing native or exotic woody vegetation.
Feeding: Exhibits a strictly phytophagous and sap-sucking diet throughout all its active developmental stages. Adults feed on the xylem sap of trees and shrubs by piercing the bark of young twigs with their specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts. Conversely, the underground nymphs extract fluids from the root systems of various host plants, showing a strong preference for native woody species and forest legumes.
Behavior: Demonstrates mainly diurnal activity during the warmest and most humid months of the year, which coincide with the southern rainy season. Males are famous for producing a loud, high-pitched, and monotonous acoustic signal to attract females and establish choruses. This drumming sound, generated by the rapid deformation of internal tymbal membranes, constitutes one of the most distinctive bioacoustic signatures of the summer season within its geographic range.
Reproduction: The lifecycle begins after mating, when the female uses her saw-like ovipositor to deposit eggs inside tiny slits carved into the tender tissue of young tree branches. Once embryonic development is complete, the first-instar nymphs hatch, fall to the forest floor, and immediately burrow into the soil, starting a prolonged subterranean phase that lasts several years. During this underground period, they build intricate tunnel systems and undergo several molts as they grow. Upon reaching the final nymphal instar, they emerge onto the surface at night, climb tree trunks, and undergo their final metamorphosis to become adults, leaving a characteristic brown exuvia behind.
Conservation status: This species has not yet been formally evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, localized habitat fragmentation and habitat loss caused by agricultural expansion and urbanization remain indirect threats to its wild populations.
