Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Is a medium-sized passerine bird measuring between 21 and 23 centimeters in length and weighing around 30 to 40 grams. It features a slender silhouette characterized by an elongated, graduated tail tipped with conspicuous white spots on the outer rectrices, which are highly visible during flight. The crown and nape are a striking glossy black, contrasting sharply with chocolate-brown upperparts and creamy, yellowish-buff underparts. A key diagnostic feature is its bright yellow iris and the presence of bare, inflatable pouches of vibrant yellow-orange skin on the sides of the neck, which are expanded during territorial and courtship displays. Both sexes are monomorphic, showing no significant differences in plumage or size.

Geographical distribution: Inhabits a wide geographic range throughout the lowlands of the Neotropics in South America. Its distribution extends from eastern Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas, southward through the entire Amazon Basin of Brazil, eastern Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, reaching as far south as northern Paraguay and the northeastern wetlands of Argentina, specifically in the provinces of Formosa, Chaco, and Corrientes. It is a non-migratory species, remaining in its established territories year-round.

Habitat: Is strictly restricted to freshwater wetland ecosystems. Preferred environments include marshes, swamps, lake margins, oxbow lakes, and slow-moving riverbanks. It is highly dependent on dense stands of emergent vegetation, such as cattails (Typha), sedges, reedbeds, and Heliconia patches, which provide crucial nesting sites, foraging substrates, and protection from predators.

Feeding: Maintains an strictly insectivorous diet. It actively preys upon a wide variety of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, such as beetles, caterpillars, dragonflies, spiders, and small snails. Foraging occurs primarily within emergent and floating vegetation, where individuals can be seen hopping among water hyacinths or clinging to vertical reed stalks near the water´s surface to glean prey.

Behavior: Is highly conspicuous, vocal, and intensely territorial. It is well-known for its complex, highly synchronized vocal duets performed by monogamous pairs to defend their territory. These duets are accompanied by physical displays, including side-to-side tail-wagging and the inflation of their bright yellow neck sacs. They frequently perch in prominent, elevated positions atop marsh reeds to monitor their surroundings and announce their presence.

Nesting: Constructs an open, messy cup nest made of woven grasses, aquatic plant fibers, and dry roots. This structure is typically suspended between vertical reed stems or low branches of marsh shrubs, situated low over water to deter terrestrial predators. The female usually lays 2 to 3 eggs, which are whitish-pink and heavily speckled with reddish-brown markings. This species exhibits cooperative breeding, with older offspring remaining in the parental territory to help defend the nesting site and feed the subsequent generation of chicks.

Conservation status: Is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. While its global population is considered stable due to its extensive range, localized threats persist. The primary threat to this species is the drainage, degradation, and fragmentation of freshwater wetlands driven by agricultural expansion and urban development.
