Description

Is one of the largest rodents in the world, displaying a highly distinctive morphology that superficially resembles a hare due to its elongated limbs and prominent, erect ears. Adult specimens weigh between 8 and 16 kg and measure 69 to 75 cm in total length. Their dense, short pelage is predominantly brownish-gray on the dorsal region, transitioning to bright orange-tan on the flanks and chin, and ending in a creamy white belly. A highly diagnostic feature is the stark white patch on the rump, sharply bordered by a dark band. Their large, laterally placed eyes are equipped with long eyelashes that shield them from the heavy, dust-laden winds of their native plains. The hind legs are significantly longer than the forelimbs, ending in three digits equipped with hoof-like claws specialized for rapid, cursorial locomotion.

Geographical distribution: Is strictly endemic to Argentina, spanning a wide latitudinal range from the central provinces down to the northern expanses of Patagonia. Historically widely distributed, its current populations are documented from Catamarca, La Rioja, and Córdoba in the north, extending southward through La Pampa, San Luis, Mendoza, Neuquén, Río Negro, and reaching its southernmost boundary in Santa Cruz. Ongoing anthropogenic pressure has resulted in a severe fragmentation of its northernmost populations.

Habitat: Inhabits arid and semi-arid environments, demonstrating a strong ecological affinity for the Monte Desert, the Espinal, and the cold shrub-steppes of the Patagonian Steppe. It prefers open, flat terrains characterized by sparse herbaceous cover and scattered shrubs, such as Larrea species, which afford excellent visibility to detect oncoming predators from afar. It actively avoids dense woodlands and extremely rugged terrain, relying heavily on sandy or clay-loam soils that are stable enough to support communal den networks but pliable enough for excavation.

Feeding: Exhibits a strictly herbivorous and generalist dietary strategy, consuming a broad spectrum of vegetation determined by seasonal availability. The diet consists primarily of grasses, perennial and annual herbs, shrub leaves, bark, and seeds. In times of prolonged drought, this caviid turns to cacti and succulent plants, extracting high volumes of metabolic water from these tissues, which allows it to thrive without direct access to free-standing water sources for extended periods.

Behavior: Is characterized by its strictly diurnal activity patterns and a social structure defined by long-term monogamy, a highly unusual trait among rodents. Mated pairs form lifelong bonds and exhibit highly coordinated movements, where the male acts as a vigilant sentinel while the female grazes. Capable of remarkable speeds, it can run up to 45-56 km/h using unique gaits like galloping and stotting. They make extensive use of anal gland secretions to mark territorial boundaries and communicate complex social cues.

Reproduction: Features a highly complex communal system where the gestation period lasts between 90 and 100 days, resulting in litters of 1 to 3 precocial offspring. Pupping seasons occur predominantly between August and January. The defining aspect of its reproductive cycle is the utilization of communal nursery dens where up to 20 breeding pairs deposit their young. While the offspring share the subterranean tunnels, mothers utilize specialized acoustic and olfactory recognition to nurse only their own young, while fathers aggressively guard the burrow entrance against potential predators.

Conservation status: Is currently listed as Near Threatened (NT) by the IUCN Red List. The primary threats driving its population decline are habitat loss and fragmentation caused by agricultural expansion and overgrazing, competitive exclusion by the introduced European hare (Lepus europaeus) and livestock, illegal hunting, and predation by domestic and feral dogs.
