Description

Features a robust and compact body structure, covered by a coarse, bristly coat of uniform grizzled gray-black coloration. Its most prominent diagnostic feature is a distinct band of yellowish-white hair running obliquely from the shoulders to the lower jaw, creating a collar-like appearance. Adult specimens typically measure between 30 and 40 inches (80 to 100 centimeters) in total length, with a shoulder height of 12 to 20 inches (30 to 50 centimeters), and weigh between 30 and 65 pounds (14 to 30 kilograms). It has slender legs ending in functional hooves designed for agile movement across diverse terrains. The head is large and triangular, ending in a mobile cartilaginous snout. A specialized dorsal scent gland is located on its lower back, secreting a musky, strong-smelling fluid used for territorial marking and social recognition within the group.

Geographical distribution: Occurs across a vast geographical range in the Western Hemisphere, extending from the southwestern United States (primarily Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas) through Mexico and all of Central America. Its southern range extends deep into South America, reaching northern Argentina, the Chaco region of Paraguay, and almost the entirety of Brazil, avoiding only highly urbanized landscapes.

Habitat: Shows remarkable ecological adaptability, inhabiting a wide array of ecosystems. It is frequently found in tropical rainforests, dry deciduous forests, savanna woodlands, montane chaparral, and arid desert environments such as the Sonoran Desert. It thrives in areas that offer dense vegetative cover for predator avoidance alongside accessible water sources, occasionally occupying agricultural frontiers.

Feeding: Exhibits an opportunistic omnivorous diet with a strong herbivorous tendency. In arid regions, it relies heavily on prickly pear cacti of the genus Opuntia, which supply both essential hydration and nutrients. Its diet is composed of roots, tubers, fallen fruits, seeds, and bulbs, which are supplemented with insects, small lizards, amphibians, fungi, and carrion when available.

Behavior: Operates as a highly social species, forming stable, cohesive herds known as squadrons, typically consisting of 5 to 15 individuals, though some groups can reach up to 50 members. These groups maintain a clear social hierarchy governed by dominant males. Members communicate through a complex repertoire of vocalizations and mutual grooming, rubbing their dorsal glands against one another to maintain a collective group scent. Activity patterns are mostly diurnal or crepuscular, shifting to nocturnal behaviors during hot summer months.

Reproduction: Breeding occurs throughout the entire year without a strict seasonal pattern, although birth peaks often coincide with the arrival of rainy seasons when food resources are abundant. The gestation period lasts approximately 140 to 150 days, after which the female isolates herself in a secluded den or hollow log to give birth to two precocial young (ranging from one to three). The newborns are well-developed, capable of running with the herd shortly after birth, and display a reddish-brown coat with a dark stripe along the spine.

Conservation status: Listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although widespread and resilient, local populations face localized threats from habitat fragmentation, deforestation, and intensive subsistence hunting for meat and hide production in several developing regions.
