Feeding: Operating as a highly polyphagous herbivore, this insect feeds by inserting its piercing-sucking mouthparts into plant tissues to extract sap. It exhibits a destructive preference for young seedlings of maize and wheat, injecting phytotoxic saliva during feeding that induces leaf twisting, stunted growth, and the classic "dead heart" symptom. It also feeds on developing pods and seeds in soybean crops.
Behavior: Exhibits mostly diurnal activity, search-foraging on plants during warm hours and retreating to the protective cover of soil stubble during colder periods. During winter or dry seasons, adults undergo a state of oligopause or reproductive diapause beneath the leaf litter, emerging vigorously in early spring to exploit newly germinated crops.
Reproduction: The reproductive process begins with courtship and mating on host plant foliage. Gravid females oviposit compact clusters of pale green eggs on the undersides of leaves or along plant stems. Following an incubation period dictated by ambient temperature, the nymphs hatch and progress through five nymphal instars before reaching morphological maturity, requiring adequate environmental humidity to successfully complete their ecdysis cycles.
Conservation status: Given its status as a major agricultural pest in South American grain production, this species has not been evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Far from being threatened, its high population densities require intensive monitoring and the implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) programs, which include chemical control and biological control strategies using egg parasitoid wasps.
