Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a medium-to-large passerine bird belonging to the woodcreeper subfamily Dendrocolaptinae, distinguished by its upright posture and rigid, spiny tail feathers used for vertical climbing. It measures between 25 and 28 centimeters in length and weighs around 50 to 70 grams. Its most diagnostic feature is its stout, straight bill, which is noticeably pale with an ivory to pinkish-horn color, occasionally showing a slightly darker culmen. The plumage displays a complex pattern: the crown and nape are dark brown with prominent whitish or buff-colored streaks, while the back is a solid olive-brown. The throat is dirty white with faint dark scaling, transitioning to a distinct horizontal blackish-and-buffy barring on the breast and abdomen. The flight feathers and the tail show a vivid, contrasting bright rufous-chestnut color.

Geographical distribution This taxon is native to the central-eastern regions of South America. It is widely distributed across eastern and southern Brazil (ranging from the states of Ceará and Bahia down to Rio Grande do Sul), covering major biomes such as the Cerrado, Caatinga, and Atlantic Forest. Its range also extends into eastern Paraguay, the extreme northeastern corner of Argentina (specifically in the Misiones province), and localized populations in eastern Bolivia.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits the understory and mid-story of subtropical and tropical humid evergreen forests, montane forests, semi-deciduous woodlands, and gallery forests. It exhibits a high tolerance to mature secondary forests and fragmented wooded patches, provided there are large trees with deeply furrowed bark. It can be found from sea level up to elevations of approximately 1500 meters above sea level.

Feeding Its diet is strictly insectivorous, focusing on a wide array of arthropods, such as beetles, spiders, orthopterans, wood-boring larvae, and ants. It occasionally supplements this diet with small vertebrates, including tiny lizards and tree frogs. This species employs an active foraging technique, probing its pale bill into bark crevices, dead wood, epiphytes, and bromeliads. It is a regular army ant follower, waiting near Eciton swarms to snatch fleeing insects flushed by the ants.

Behavior: It is typically observed as a solitary individual or in territorial pairs. It frequently participates in mixed-species feeding flocks, joining other forest insectivores. It ascends tree trunks in a spiral fashion using its stiffened rectrices as a prop, moving with rapid hops. Its vocalization is a loud, musical, and rhythmic series of clear whistled notes that rise and fall, primarily used to establish and defend territory during the early morning hours.

Nesting Its breeding cycle takes place in tree cavities. It utilizes natural hollows in decaying trunks or abandoned nests excavated by woodpeckers (Picidae), usually situated between 3 and 10 meters above the ground. The inner chamber is lined with shredded bark and dry leaves. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 pristine white eggs. Both parents share the incubation duties, which last about 15 to 18 days, and both actively provision and protect the nestlings until they fledge.

Conservation status It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although its population is experiencing a gradual decline due to deforestation, habitat fragmentation of the Atlantic Forest, and the loss of old-growth trees that provide nesting cavities, it remains relatively common and widespread within protected national parks and forest reserves across its range.
