Records from Ruta Nacional 101 - Tierra colorada

Conservation status: Data Deficient

Description

Is a medium-sized hystricomorph rodent characterized by a body length ranging from 45 to 57 centimeters and an average body weight between 2.5 and 4 kilograms. Its pelage is coarse, glossy, and dense, featuring a dorsal coloration that blends olive-brown, yellowish-brown, and grizzled buff, which provides exceptional camouflage within forest understories. The underparts are markedly paler, showcasing whitish or pale yellow tones. This mammal exhibits highly slender limbs, with the hind legs being significantly longer than the forelegs, facilitating efficient cursorial locomotion and jumping. The hind feet possess only three digits equipped with strong, hoof-like claws, whereas the forefeet have four functional digits utilized for precise food manipulation. The head is elongated with conspicuous rounded ears, and it possesses a virtually non-existent vestigial tail that measures less than 2.5 centimeters.

Geographical distribution: Occurs natively across central-eastern South America. Its geographic range encompasses extensive regions of southern Brazil, the entirety of eastern Paraguay, and extends into northeastern Argentina, particularly inhabiting provinces such as Misiones, Corrientes, Chaco, and Formosa. Historical records also suggest its potential presence in adjacent transboundary areas of southeastern Bolivia.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits moist tropical and subtropical forests, demonstrating a strong association with the Atlantic Forest biome and the dense gallery forests flanking major river systems. It also colonizes secondary forests, thick scrublands, swampy areas, and the edges of agricultural fields, provided there is sufficient undergrowth to offer refuge from predators and steady access to freshwater sources.

Feeding: Is strictly herbivorous, specializing as a frugivore and granivore. Its diet consists of a diverse array of fallen fruits, seeds, nuts, succulent tubers, roots, and young shoots. This rodent plays a vital ecological role as a keystone seed disperser through scatterhoarding behavior, a practice where it buries surplus seeds (such as those of the parana pine Araucaria angustifolia) in scattered shallow caches throughout its territory, many of which are never retrieved and subsequently germinate.

Behavior: Exhibits mainly diurnal and crepuscular activity patterns, although it can shift to nocturnal habits in areas subject to heavy human disturbance or hunting pressure. The species is territorial and solitary or lives in stable monogamous pairs that actively defend their home range using scent-marking from anal glands and warning vocalizations resembling sharp, hoarse barks. It is remarkably agile, capable of executing vertical leaps of up to 2 meters from a standing position when startled, fleeing rapidly toward hollow logs, burrows, or thick brush.

Reproduction: Breeding occurs throughout most of the year, with birth peaks frequently aligning with periods of maximum fruit abundance. Following a gestation period of approximately 100 to 120 days, females give birth to a litter of 1 to 3 young. The offspring are highly precocial, born fully furred with their eyes wide open, and are capable of running just hours after birth, a crucial adaptation for escaping predators. While weaning occurs at around eight weeks, the young begin to sample solid food within their first week of life.

Conservation status: Is currently classified as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, a status reflecting taxonomic uncertainties and a lack of recent, comprehensive population assessments throughout its range. However, at local and national levels, populations face significant threats stemming from habitat fragmentation driven by agricultural expansion and hunting pressure for bushmeat, leading to localized population declines and extinctions across several parts of its historical range.
