Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

It is a medium-sized bird of prey with a robust yet slender build, measuring between 19 and 22 inches in total length. This raptor exhibits a highly contrasting plumage, characterized by a glossy blue-black coloration covering the upperparts, head, throat side, and upper breast, which stands out sharply against the pure white of the lower breast, abdomen, flanks, and undertail coverts. A prominent patch of bright orange-yellow bare skin surrounds the eyes and extends to the base of the bill, complemented by pale yellow legs adapted for walking. Juvenile birds differ significantly, presenting duller brownish tones, dark streaks on the belly, and much paler, yellowish-grey facial skin.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the southern tip of South America, occupying a narrow strip along the Andean mountain range in southern Chile and southwestern Argentina. Its distribution range spans from the Biobío region and Neuquén province in the north, continuing southwards through Patagonia to the remote archipelago of Tierra del Fuego.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits the edges of subantarctic temperate forests, particularly those dominated by Nothofagus southern beeches, as well as adjacent open areas of the Patagonian steppe. It is frequently recorded on rocky cliffs, deep ravines, mountain ridges, and valleys ranging from sea level up to elevations of 8,200 feet, demonstrating a high tolerance to the harsh, windy, and cold climates of the southern Andes.

Feeding: It exhibits an opportunistic and omnivorous feeding behavior, functioning as both an active predator and a versatile scavenger. Its diet consists of small mammals, lizards, terrestrial invertebrates, insect larvae, and the nestlings of other bird species. Additionally, it regularly feeds on carrion from animals killed by larger predators or roadkill, and will occasionally supplement its nutritional intake with wild berries and other plant matter.

Behavior: It is typically observed singly, in territorial pairs, or in small family groups that cooperatively patrol their home ranges. It is highly terrestrial compared to other raptors, spending considerable time walking and running on the ground searching for prey, often turning over stones and debris with its strong talons. Possessing a curious and bold temperament, it is an agile flyer capable of soaring effortlessly along mountain slopes, uttering harsh, croaking calls when disturbed or during courtship displays.

Nesting: Breeding activity takes place during the austral spring and summer, mainly from October to December. It constructs its nest on sheltered ledges of high rocky cliffs or occasionally in the canopy of tall, mature trees. The nest is a bulky platform made of dry twigs and branches, lined internally with animal wool, dry grass, and hair for insulation. The female typically lays 2 to 3 eggs, which are creamy-white with dense reddish-brown speckles, incubated by both parents for approximately 30 days.

Conservation status: It is currently listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although it occupies a large geographical range, it is considered naturally uncommon and occurs at low population densities throughout its habitat. The main long-term threats to this raptor include habitat loss and fragmentation of native subantarctic forests, climate change affecting alpine zones, and occasional human persecution due to unfounded concerns regarding predation on small domestic livestock.
