Description


Features a wingspan ranging from 90 to 110 millimeters, exhibiting a highly distinctive bright orange background pattern interlaced with a complex network of dark black veins. The outer edges of both forewings and hindwings are bordered by a thick dark band densely adorned with a double row of small white and yellowish spots. Unlike other closely related species, it lacks the solid black apical patch on the forewings, showing instead a continuous tawny coloration that merges smoothly towards the margins. Subtle sexual dimorphism is present; males possess a specialized black glandular patch on the hindwings used for pheromone dispersion, and their wing veins are slightly thinner than those of females. Larvae are characterized by transverse bands of black, yellow, and white colors, bearing flexible fleshy filaments on both the thoracic and abdominal regions. The chrysalis is pale green and decorated with a subtle golden line and black dots near its crown.

Geographical distribution: Is broadly distributed throughout the southern portion of South America, spanning from southern Brazil and across the territory of Paraguay to most of Uruguay and the central and northern provinces of Argentina. Its ecological range occasionally extends into the eastern lowlands of Bolivia and temperate microclimates in Chile, showing high adaptability to the temperate and subtropical climates of the southern cone.

Habitat: Occurs predominantly in open biomes, including temperate grasslands, scrublands, and savannas, as well as highly anthropized environments such as agricultural fields, pastures, roadsides, and urban parks and gardens. Its survival is strictly tied to riparian corridors and damp depressions where its larval host plants naturally grow, adapting successfully to both rural and semi-urban landscapes.

Feeding: Is a highly specialized herbivore during its larval stage, feeding exclusively on the foliage of latex-producing plants within the Apocynaceae family, particularly Asclepias curassavica, Araujia hortorum, and Morrenia odorata. These host plants contain toxic cardenolides that the caterpillar sequesters and stores in its body tissues as a defense mechanism. Adults, conversely, are generalist nectarivores that use their specialized proboscis to feed on a wide variety of flowers, showing a strong preference for Asteraceae species such as Senecio and Solidago, which provide essential sugars for sustained flight.

Behavior: Displays a characteristic gliding and soaring flight pattern, utilizing warm thermal updrafts to travel significant heights with minimal energy expenditure. Although it does not perform the massive, long-distance migratory events observed in northern hemisphere congeners, it undertakes notable seasonal movements to escape winter temperatures, traveling northward to warmer subtropical latitudes. Its striking color pattern serves as a classic example of aposematism, signaling to potential predators, particularly insectivorous birds, that its tissues contain unpalatable and emetic chemical compounds.

Reproduction: Begins with an intricate aerial courtship where the male pursues the female and utilizes abdominal structures called hair pencils to release aphrodisiac pheromones. Following successful copulation, the female deposits small, cream-colored eggs individually on the underside of host plant leaves. After an incubation period of five to eight days, the small larva hatches and undergoes five distinct growth instars before entering pupation. The transition from egg to adult takes approximately three to four weeks, heavily influenced by ambient seasonal temperatures.

Conservation status: Is currently not evaluated globally by the IUCN Red List, though regional assessments frequently categorize it as a species of Least Concern (LC). Nevertheless, local populations face silent declines due to habitat destruction caused by agricultural expansion, intensive use of herbicides that eradicate host plants, and urban sprawl that disrupts natural dispersal corridors.
