Description


Characterized by a highly hemispherical and convex dorsal profile, this insect measures between 3.2 and 6.5 millimeters in length. Its most distinctive feature is the immaculate, bright red or deep orange coloration of the elytra, which completely lack any black spots, distinguishing Cycloneda sanguinea from many other sympatric coccinellids. The pronotum is a glossy jet black marked with a yellowish-white border and two characteristic curved white spots resembling hooks. Sexual dimorphism is visible in the head coloration; males display a prominent white vertical stripe on the front of the head, whereas females possess a mostly black head with two isolated white lateral markings. The short antennae and legs are dark brown to black, adapted for agile movement through complex plant canopies.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely throughout the Americas, spanning from the southern United States, particularly in regions like Florida and Texas, southward through Mexico, the Caribbean islands, and Central America, all the way to temperate zones of South America, including Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, and Chile. It represents one of the most ubiquitous and abundant lady beetle species in both Neotropical and southern Nearctic realms.

Habitat: Inhabits a diverse array of terrestrial ecosystems such as dry forests, savannas, scrublands, and grasslands. It exhibits high ecological plasticity, allowing it to colonize human-modified environments with great success, including agricultural fields (such as soy, citrus, and agriculture crops), urban gardens, orchards, and city parks, showing a strong preference for sunny, open areas with abundant herbaceous cover and shrubby vegetation where its prey thrives.

Feeding: Functions as an active and voracious predator primarily categorized as aphidophagous, feeding heavily on numerous species of aphids. In addition to these hemipterans, it preys upon other soft-bodied invertebrates, including scale insects, whiteflies, mealybugs, and spider mites, as well as the eggs of various moths and butterflies. When prey populations decline, individuals frequently turn to non-animal food sources such as pollen and floral nectar to sustain their nutritional requirements until active prey becomes available again.

Behavior: Displays strictly diurnal activity patterns, conducting intense foraging and flight movements during the warmest hours of the day. To deter potential predators like insectivorous birds, lizards, and ants, this species utilizes a chemical defense mechanism known as reflex bleeding, secreting a bitter, foul-smelling yellow fluid containing toxic alkaloids from its femorotibial joints. In regions with marked seasonal thermal variations, adults undergo a state of reproductive diapause during the cold winter months, aggregating under tree bark, rock crevices, or leaf litter to survive low temperatures.

Reproduction: Undergoes a complete metamorphosis, or holometabolous life cycle, comprising egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Following successful mating, the female deposits clusters of spindle-shaped, bright yellow eggs on the undersides of leaves, strategically placing them near active aphid colonies to provide immediate food for the hatching larvae. The active, campodeiform larvae are charcoal gray to black with yellow or orange markings and are highly predatory from the moment they emerge. After progressing through four distinct larval instars, they transition into a static pupa stage anchored to the plant surface, eventually emerging as adults in a process heavily regulated by ambient temperature and relative humidity.

Conservation status: Has not been evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list. Because of its massive geographical range, high ecological tolerance, and stable population dynamics across agricultural landscapes, the species is currently secure. Nonetheless, the intensive application of broad-spectrum chemical pesticides in modern agricultural practices poses a significant localized threat, accidentally decimating these beneficial insects and disrupting their critical ecological service as natural biological control agents.
