Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Near Threatened

Description

Displays a robust morphology, reaching an average body length of 14 to 16 inches (36 to 40 centimeters) and weighing approximately 270 grams. The plumage is highly distinctive, characterized by a stark contrast where the head, throat, and upper breast are deep velvety black, creating a hood-like appearance. In contrast, the rest of the body is covered in a brilliant, rich ultramarine blue. No obvious sexual dimorphism is present, as males and females share identical coloration patterns and physical dimensions. The bill is strong, thick, and black, specifically adapted for cracking open tough seeds, while the irises are dark and the legs are sturdy and black.

Geographical distribution: Occurs endemically in the south-central portion of South America. Its geographic range is primary centered in southeastern and southern Brazil, spanning from the state of São Paulo south to Rio Grande do Sul. It also extends marginally into eastern Paraguay and the far northeastern corner of Argentina, specifically within the province of Misiones.

Habitat: Is strictly associated with the Atlantic Forest biome, exhibiting a remarkably strong ecological dependence on Araucaria moist forests (Araucaria angustifolia), also known as mixed ombrophilous forests. It occupies the middle and upper canopy of both pristine primary forests and mature secondary forests, generally distributed at elevations ranging from 1,300 to 4,900 feet (400 to 1,500 meters) above sea level, though it may descend closer to sea level in coastal forest strips.

Feeding: Maintains an omnivorous and opportunistic diet. During the cold autumn and winter months, its diet relies heavily on the seeds of the parana pine (Araucaria angustifolia), known as pinhão seeds, which the bird actively harvests, transports, and caches under the leaf litter or inside epiphytes. Additionally, it consumes a wide variety of invertebrates, insects, small vertebrates such as lizards, and the eggs or nestlings of other bird species, alongside various wild fruits and berries. Its caching behavior makes it a critical ecological engineer for the natural regeneration of these endangered forests.

Behavior: Is a highly social and intelligent species, living in complex, stable family groups ranging from 4 to 15 individuals. These groups coordinate territory defense, foraging, and predator sentinel duties through an intricate communication network composed of at least fourteen distinct vocalizations, ranging from harsh, raspy alarm calls to quiet warbles and mimicry of local birds of prey. Their flight is typically undulating and noisy, with family members following each other in single file from one tree canopy to the next.

Nesting: Breeding occurs through a highly organized cooperative breeding system, where the dominant mating pair is assisted by several non-breeding helpers (usually offspring from previous seasons). Together, they construct a bulky, cup-shaped nest made of intertwined twigs and roots, strategically placed high in the canopy of an Araucaria or other dense tree, usually at heights of 33 to 65 feet (10 to 20 meters). The female lays a clutch of 2 to 4 greenish-blue eggs speckled with dark brown. Incubation lasts between 18 and 22 days and is performed almost exclusively by the female, who is continuously fed by her mate and the cooperative group members.

Conservation status: Is currently classified as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List. The primary threat to this corvid is the severe fragmentation and destruction of its native habitat, primarily driven by logging and the agricultural conversion of the highly threatened Araucaria forests into cattle pastures and commercial monoculture plantations.
