Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by a striking color pattern and an elegant silhouette, this taxon measures approximately 32 to 35 centimeters in length and weighs around 140 grams. It is immediately recognized by a stiff, velvety frontal crest situated on the forehead and anterior crown. The plumage of the head, throat, and breast is a deep jet-black, creating a vivid contrast with the creamy-white or pale yellow underparts. Bright blue patches are located above and below the eyes, complemented by a light violet-blue nape that transitions into a dark purplish-blue back and wing coverts. The long tail, of the same dark blue tone, features a broad white tip on the outer feathers, which is highly visible in flight. The iris is a piercing, intense yellow that contrasts sharply against the dark facial mask, while the strong, robust bill and legs are entirely black.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a wide range across central and northeastern South America. Its distribution extends from central and southern Brazil (including states like Mato Grosso, São Paulo, and Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Bolivia, the entirety of Paraguay, northern and central Argentina (reaching as far south as Córdoba and Buenos Aires provinces due to recent expansion), and northwestern Uruguay.

Habitat: Inhabits an impressive variety of forested biomes, demonstrating remarkable ecological plasticity. It is commonly found in humid subtropical and tropical forests, semi-deciduous woodlands, dry Chaco savannas, gallery forests along riverways, secondary growth forests (locally known as capueras), as well as exotic tree plantations, urban parks, and agricultural areas with remnant patches of native vegetation.

Feeding: Exhibits a distinctly omnivorous and opportunistic diet. It consumes a broad range of invertebrates (including caterpillars, beetles, grasshoppers, and spiders), small vertebrates such as lizards, frogs, and the eggs and nestlings of other bird species. In addition, it feeds heavily on plant matter, such as wild fruits, seeds, nuts, and araucaria pine seeds where available, and readily scavenges on carrion and anthropogenic food waste in human-modified landscapes.

Behavior: Stands out as a highly social and intelligent species, typically moving in cohesive family groups of 10 to 12 individuals. It possesses an incredibly diverse and loud vocal repertoire, emitting harsh, metallic alarm calls and exhibiting a notable ability to mimic other birds´ songs and environmental sounds. While foraging, the group utilizes a sentinel system where one individual perches high in the canopy to watch for predators and sound the alarm.

Nesting: The breeding season takes place primarily from October to December. They build a sturdy, open cup-shaped nest using twigs, dry sticks, and roots, lining the interior with softer plant fibers, typically situated at a height of 4 to 8 meters in dense tree foliage. The clutch consists of 2 to 6 eggs, which are pale green or cream-colored, heavily speckled with brown spots. The species frequently exhibits a cooperative breeding system, where offspring from previous years act as helpers, actively assisting the breeding pair in feeding the nestlings and defending the nesting territory.

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Population trends remain stable due to its high tolerance for fragmented habitats and its vast geographical distribution, which buffers the species against immediate threats from deforestation.
