Description

Belongs to a group of highly convex and rounded beetles, typically measuring between 4 and 5 millimeters in length. Its most distinctive physical characteristic is the dorsal coloration, which displays a brilliant metallic blue or deep greenish-blue sheen on the elytra, lacking any spots or patterns. Sexual dimorphism is clearly visible in the coloration of the head; males feature a pale yellow to light brown frons, whereas females possess a dark or black head. The larvae are elongated and active, colored in shades of gray to black with distinct spine-like structures called scoli along their bodies, occasionally featuring yellow or orange markings on their abdominal segments.

Geographical distribution: Is native to Mexico, Central America, and parts of the Caribbean. Due to its effectiveness as a biological control agent, it has been widely introduced to other regions of the world, establishing stable populations in Florida (United States), the Hawaiian Islands, and across vast regions of South Asia, Southeast Asia (including the Philippines and Indonesia), as well as parts of East Africa.

Habitat: Occurs primarily in tropical and subtropical ecosystems, showing high adaptability to disturbed areas, agricultural landscapes, citrus orchards, and forest plantations. Its presence is highly correlated with the abundance of host plants of its prey, most notably being found in stands of the leguminous tree Leucaena leucocephala, where dense colonies of plant-feeding insects provide a constant source of sustenance.

Feeding: Exhibited as an obligate predator during both its larval and adult life stages. Its diet is specialized toward phytophagous hemipterans, showing a strong preference for the leucaena psyllid (Heteropsylla cubana). However, it functions as an opportunistic generalist predator, consuming scale insects (families Coccidae and Diaspididae), whiteflies, aphids, and occasionally mites, which makes it highly effective in agricultural pest management.

Behavior: Displays strictly diurnal activity patterns, actively crawling over leaves and twigs in search of food. When threatened by potential predators, this beetle can employ a chemical defense mechanism known as reflex bleeding, secreting a bitter, foul-smelling yellow hemolymph from its leg joints to deter predators. It is an efficient flyer, capable of dispersing quickly to colonize new areas when prey populations decline in its immediate vicinity.

Reproduction: Undergoes a complex life cycle characterized by complete metamorphosis or holometabolism. Mature females deposit small clusters of bright yellow eggs on the surface of leaves or stems, strategically positioned near active colonies of prey. After an incubation period lasting 4 to 6 days, the predatory larvae hatch and develop through four distinct instars before entering the pupal stage, eventually emerging as mature adults after approximately one week.

Conservation status: Has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List, thus carrying the status of Not Evaluated (NE). Because of its wide artificial distribution, robust populations, and high adaptability, it is not considered threatened or at risk of extinction.
