It is one of the largest and fastest iguanas in the Americas, well known for its remarkable ability to move rapidly across open and rocky terrain. Ctenosaura similis possesses a robust body, a relatively large head, powerful limbs, and a long tail equipped with distinctive rings of enlarged spiny scales that give the species its characteristic appearance. Coloration varies according to age, sex, and geographic location, although shades of gray, brown, olive, and black are generally predominant. Many individuals display dark transverse bands across the body and tail, particularly during juvenile stages. Adult males are typically larger than females and develop more prominent dorsal crests as well as heavier musculature. Its eyesight is highly developed and plays an important role in detecting predators, food sources, and other individuals.
Geographic Distribution: Its natural range extends from southern Mexico through Central America, including Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. The species has also been introduced to several locations outside its native range, particularly in parts of the Caribbean and southern United States, where established breeding populations now occur. Within its native distribution it occupies a wide variety of warm seasonal environments and demonstrates considerable ecological adaptability.
Habitat: It primarily inhabits tropical dry forests, shrublands, savannas, coastal environments, rocky outcrops, forest edges, and open sun-exposed habitats. The species shows a strong preference for warm and relatively dry areas where natural refuges such as rock crevices, caves, fallen logs, and rocky shelters are available. It also adapts well to human-modified landscapes, including agricultural fields, rural settlements, roadsides, and suburban environments with suitable vegetation. Access to shelter and basking sites is essential for its survival and daily activities.
Diet: It exhibits a highly opportunistic diet that changes throughout its life. Juveniles consume a greater proportion of insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates, whereas adults gradually incorporate larger amounts of plant material. The diet includes leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, tender shoots, and invertebrates, although small vertebrates, eggs, and carrion may occasionally be consumed. This dietary flexibility contributes significantly to the species´ ability to thrive under a broad range of environmental conditions.
Behavior: This species is primarily diurnal and depends on solar radiation to regulate body temperature. During the morning it frequently basks on rocks, logs, and elevated surfaces before becoming more active. It is considered one of the fastest lizards in the Americas, capable of reaching impressive speeds when escaping predators. Adult individuals often maintain territories, particularly males during the breeding season. Communication involves body postures, visual displays, and behavioral signals associated with territorial defense and courtship. When threatened, it rapidly retreats into crevices, burrows, caves, or other secure refuges.
Reproduction: Reproductive activity is generally associated with regional climatic cycles and often intensifies during the dry season or at the onset of the rainy season, depending on local conditions. Males actively compete for access to females through visual displays and physical confrontations. Following mating, the female excavates a nest in sandy or loose soils where she deposits a clutch that may contain several dozen eggs. Incubation depends largely on environmental temperature and humidity. No parental care is provided after egg laying. Upon emergence, hatchlings must immediately face numerous predators and environmental challenges on their own.
Conservation Status: Globally, it is classified as Least Concern (LC) due to its extensive distribution and numerous populations. Nevertheless, certain local populations may be affected by habitat loss, urban expansion, direct persecution, harvesting for human consumption, and wildlife trade. In some regions, the fragmentation of tropical dry forest ecosystems also represents a significant threat. The conservation of these habitats and sustainable management of wild populations remain important for the species´ long-term persistence.
