Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Displays a robust, rounded body with an average total length of 25 centimeters. It is distinguished by a slate lead-gray coloration on the head, neck, and chest, which contrasts sharply with its dark chocolate brown mantle, back, and wings. Its bill is a highly diagnostic bright reddish-pink, showing a darker tip in some individuals, and its legs are a matching pale fleshy pink or red. The tail is virtually non-existent, hidden under the long tail coverts. Flank feathers show a subtle, complex barred pattern of white and dusky-brown. Sexual dimorphism is negligible, although females tend to be slightly heavier and display marginally different plumage tones upon close inspection.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across central, eastern, and southern South America. Its native range extends from central Brazil, including regions like Minas Gerais, Bahia, and Rio Grande do Sul, westward into eastern Bolivia, throughout most of Paraguay, into extreme southeastern Peru, and southwards into northern and central Argentina, reaching as far south as Córdoba, Santa Fe, and Buenos Aires provinces. It is a classic representative of the open and dry diagonal biomes of South America.

Habitat: Inhabits dry forests, xerophytic scrublands, secondary growth forests, and the open savannas of the Cerrado and the Chaco region. It exhibits a high degree of ecological tolerance, frequently colonizing disturbed environments such as agricultural borders, overgrown pastures, bushy clearings, and degraded woodland fragments. It avoids deep, humid rainforests with dense canopies, favoring lower vegetation layers where the dense undergrowth offers protection from potential predators.

Feeding: Maintains an omnivorous and opportunistic diet. It feeds extensively on a wide variety of seeds, agricultural grains, fallen berries, and tender leaves sourced from the forest floor. It complements this plant material with a high intake of animal protein, actively foraging for invertebrates like beetles, ants, grasshoppers, snails, spiders, and insect larvae, which it uncovers by scratching and tossing aside dry leaf litter with its strong, pointed bill.

Behavior: Is a highly terrestrial, solitary, and notoriously secretive bird. It spends almost its entire day walking stealthily through dense undergrowth, where its cryptic coloration blends seamlessly with the leaf litter. Its presence is most frequently detected by its vocalizations, which consist of a melancholic, clear, repetitive whistle emitted mostly during dawn and dusk. When threatened, it relies on its camouflage or runs swiftly into the thicket, resorting to a loud, explosive, and low-altitude flight only as a last-resort escape mechanism.

Nesting: Involves a reproductive system where the male performs all incubation duties and provides sole parental care for the chicks. The nest is a simple, shallow scrape on the ground, concealed at the base of a dense shrub, grass clump, or fallen log, sparsely lined with dry leaves and twigs. The clutch typically consists of 4 to 5 highly glossy, porcelain-like eggs that range in color from a striking purplish-pink to a lavender-grey. Incubation lasts about 19 to 21 days. The young are highly precocial, leaving the nest almost immediately after hatching to follow the male parent.

Conservation status: Is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The overall population is considered stable, as the species does not face immediate widespread threats. Its ability to adapt to degraded ecosystems, secondary forests, and human-modified agricultural landscapes protects it from the severe impacts of habitat fragmentation that affect more specialized forest birds.
