Characterized as the largest representative of its genus Crotophaga, known scientifically as Crotophaga major, this bird measures between 43 and 48 centimeters in length and weighs around 140 grams. It possesses a distinctive glossy blue-black plumage with iridescent bronze, green, and violet highlights, especially prominent on its wings and long, broad tail. The most diagnostic physical feature is its massive, laterally compressed black bill, which features a highly pronounced convex ridge or keel along the culmen. Unlike its close family relatives, its eyes feature a striking white to pale yellow iris, providing a stark contrast against its dark face and allowing clear identification in the field. The tail is graduated and exceptionally long, assisting in balance as it navigates dense riverside vegetation.
Geographical distribution This species is widely distributed throughout the lowlands of the Neotropics. Its range extends from eastern Panama and northern Colombia and Venezuela, southward through the Guianas, the Amazon basin of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, across most of Brazil, and reaching its southern limits in northern Argentina, Paraguay, and northwestern Uruguay. It is primarily a resident species, though minor seasonal movements occur in response to flooding cycles and water level fluctuations in major river basins throughout South America.
Habitat: It exhibits a strong ecological association with aquatic environments, being almost exclusively found in wet, forested habitats. Typical environments include the margins of large rivers, oxbow lakes, swamps, mangroves, flooded forests locally known as várzea, and dense gallery forests. It rarely ventures far from water bodies, remaining within the low-to-mid canopy of trees and thickets that overhang riverbanks, where land and water ecosystems converge.
Feeding Operating as an opportunistic omnivore, its diet is dominated by large invertebrates but complemented by plant matter. It actively hunts for large insects such as grasshoppers, beetles, cicadas, and caterpillars, often foraging in groups to flush out prey from dense foliage. It also consumes spiders and small vertebrates, including tree frogs and small lizards. During dry periods or when insect populations decline, it supplements its diet with various fruits, berries, and seeds gathered from the forest canopy.
Behavior: Highly social and gregarious, this species is almost always seen in tightly-knit groups of five to twelve individuals that defend a collective territory. Their vocalizations are loud, complex, and distinctive, consisting of deep, bubbling croaks, harsh rattling, and cooing whistles. They are relatively weak flyers, relying on brief gliding flights to cross rivers or hopping agilely from branch to branch. Group members engage in allopreening to reinforce social bonds and frequently sunbathe together on exposed branches to dry their feathers and regulate body temperature.
Nesting This taxon exhibits a highly complex cooperative nesting system where multiple breeding pairs coordinate their reproductive efforts. The group constructs a single, bulky cup nest made of sticks and lined with fresh green leaves, strategically positioned in branches hanging directly over water to deter terrestrial predators. Several females lay their eggs in this shared nest, resulting in collective clutches. The eggs are a beautiful deep turquoise-blue coated with a chalky white calcium carbonate layer. All members of the social group, including non-breeding helpers, participate in incubating the eggs, defending the nesting site, and feeding the chicks.
Conservation status It is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, owing to its extremely large geographic range and stable global population trends. Nonetheless, local populations face localized threats from wetland drainage, agricultural expansion, river channelization, and the destruction of riparian forests. The conservation of undisturbed riverine corridors and freshwater wetlands remains crucial to ensuring the long-term survival of this unique social species.
