Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by an entirely glossy black plumage with subtle bronze and purplish iridescence, this medium-sized bird reaches a total length of 33 to 36 centimeters and a body mass ranging from 70 to 120 grams. Its most defining anatomical feature is a massive, laterally compressed bill showing a highly arched, smooth culmen ridge that lacks any longitudinal grooves. The species possesses a notably long, floppy tail which it often wiggles loosely, dark brown eyes, and black zygodactyl feet that facilitate agile movement through tangled shrubbery and tall grasses.

Geographical distribution: This taxon is widely distributed throughout the Neotropics, ranging from southern Florida (where it is now rare), the Caribbean islands, and the Bahamas, southward through Central America to South America, extending as far south as northern Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. It behaves primarily as a sedentary resident across its entire geographic range, although populations may engage in localized, nomadic movements driven by seasonal precipitation and food availability.

Habitat: It primarily colonizes open and semi-open landscapes, including shrubby pastures, savannas, agricultural fields, forest edges, clearings, and suburban open areas. This species strictly avoids pristine, closed-canopy rainforests, showing a clear preference for human-modified landscapes where deforestation has created mosaic habitats, occurring mostly in lowland regions below 1,500 meters above sea level.

Feeding: The diet is highly opportunistic and omnivorous, consisting mostly of large insects such as grasshoppers, beetles, caterpillars, and cicadas, alongside spiders and other terrestrial invertebrates. It also consumes small vertebrates including lizards, frogs, and small rodents, and supplements its nutritional intake with wild berries, seeds, and agricultural fruits. It is widely recognized for its habit of following cattle to capture insects flushed by the livestock´s movement.

Behavior: Highly social and gregarious, this species lives in tightly knit cooperative groups of 2 to 20 individuals that forage, roost, and defend their territory together. Their flight is weak, flapping, and gliding, making them look clumsy as they move between low bushes. They communicate using a wide repertoire of whining vocalizations, most notably a distinctive, rising whistle that sounds like "ah-nee", which functions to coordinate group movements and warn of predators.

Nesting: It exhibits a fascinating joint-nesting cooperative system, where several females of the same social group lay their eggs in a single communal nest. This large, bulky structure is made of twigs and thickly lined with fresh green leaves. The eggs have a unique deep blue-green shell covered by a white, chalky calcium carbonate layer that wears off during incubation. All members of the group, including non-breeding helpers, participate in nest construction, incubation, and the shared feeding and protection of the fledglings.

Conservation status: It is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Due to its high tolerance for anthropogenic habitats and its ability to colonize deforested lands cleared for agriculture and livestock, its global population remains stable and vast across its extensive distribution.
