Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by a highly specialized morphology adapted for a terrestrial lifestyle, this small passerine strongly resembles pipits or waterthrushes. Adults typically measure between 5.1 and 5.5 inches (13 to 14 centimeters) in length and weigh approximately 13 to 16 grams. The upperparts are wrapped in a uniform olive-brown to grayish-brown plumage, which contrasts sharply with the underparts, featuring a pristine white breast and flanks heavily streaked with dark brownish-black. A faint, pale supercilium is visible above the eye, and the crown is slightly darker than the back. It possesses conspicuously long, pinkish legs that facilitate walking on the forest floor, along with a slender, straight bill where the mandible is pale.

Geographical distribution: Occurs natively across east-central South America. Its range encompasses vast regions of Brazil, extending from the southern portions of Maranhão and Ceará down through the Atlantic Forest to Rio Grande do Sul. It is also regularly recorded in eastern Paraguay and reaches its southernmost limit in northeastern Argentina, with established populations in the provinces of Misiones and northern Corrientes.

Habitat: Primarily frequents the understory and floor of humid subtropical and tropical lowland forests, as well as semi-deciduous woodlands and gallery forests. It exhibits a strong preference for shaded areas characterized by a thick layer of leaf litter, often near streams, swampy margins, or microhabitats with high ambient humidity, avoiding open or highly degraded landscapes.

Feeding: Sustains itself on a strictly insectivorous diet. It actively searches for food while walking along the ground, employing a foraging technique that involves flipping leaf litter with its bill to expose hidden prey. Its diet consists of a diverse array of small arthropods, including beetles, ants, spiders, larvae, and small flies, occasionally performing short, vertical sallies to glean insects from low-hanging foliage.

Behavior: Noted for its highly terrestrial and solitary habits, seldom participating in mixed-species foraging flocks. While walking, it performs a distinctive head-bobbing motion and frequently pumps its tail vertically. Although quiet and easily overlooked due to its cryptic plumage and preference for the dark forest floor, males reveal their presence during the breeding season with a high-pitched, metallic song consisting of clear, repeated whistles delivered from low perches.

Nesting: Constructs its nest on or extremely close to the ground, typically concealed under fallen logs, exposed roots, or dense leaf litter. The nest is an elaborate, dome-shaped structure with a side entrance, built using moss, dry leaves, rootlets, and fine plant fibers to achieve maximum camouflage. The female typically lays a clutch of two to three eggs, which are creamy white and heavily speckled with reddish-brown spots, incubated mostly by the female.

Conservation status: Categorized as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its populations are experiencing a moderate decline due to deforestation and the fragmentation of its native forest habitat, its extremely large geographical range ensures that the species does not currently meet the thresholds for a more critical threat category.
