Description


Belongs to a visually striking group of beetles characterized by an elongated, robust body, with adult specimens typically measuring between 20 and 30 millimeters in length. The most defining feature of this insect is the intense iridescent coloration of its elytra, which present a metallic violet, purplish, or deep blue sheen that shifts dynamically depending on the angle of light. The pronotum is orange or reddish with symmetrical black markings. Its antennae are extraordinarily long, easily exceeding the body length in male individuals. These sensory structures are dark with prominent dense black tufts of hair located on the middle antennal segments, particularly the fifth and sixth, giving them a unique feathered appearance. The legs feature vibrant reddish-orange femora contrasting sharply with dark tibiae and tarsi, adding to the striking coloration of Compsocerus violaceus.

Geographical distribution: Is widely distributed across the southern regions of South America. It is commonly found throughout southeastern and southern Brazil, including states such as São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul. Its geographic range also extends into eastern Paraguay, northern Uruguay, and the northeastern provinces of Argentina, such as Misiones, Corrientes, and Entre Ríos, where humid subtropical conditions support its ecological requirements.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits dense forest ecosystems associated with the Atlantic Forest biome and riparian forests. However, this adaptable species has successfully colonized human-modified landscapes. It is frequently observed in fruit orchards, citrus groves, vineyards, and urban parks containing suitable woody host plants, demonstrating a high degree of ecological resilience.

Feeding: During its adult stage, it exhibits phytophagous and glycivorous feeding habits. Adults primarily feed on flower nectar, pollen, and the fermenting sap oozing from damaged tree bark, as well as the juices of ripe or decaying fruits. In contrast, the larval stage is strictly wood-boring (xylophagous). The larvae feed on the inner wood of living or recently dead trees, excavating extensive galleries within host plants belonging to the Moraceae, Rutaceae, and Rosaceae families.

Behavior: Displays diurnal activity patterns, reaching its peak of activity during the warmest, sunniest hours of spring and summer. It is an active and agile flyer, navigating forest canopies in search of food and mates. Males exhibit territorial behaviors on host tree trunks, using their long antennae to locate females and deter competing males. When threatened, the beetle can produce a distinct buzzing or squeaking sound through a mechanism known as stridulation, rubbing its prothorax against the mesothorax to deter potential predators like insectivorous birds.

Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins in early spring as ambient temperatures rise. Following copulation, the female uses her specialized ovipositor to deposit eggs deep into crevices within the bark of host tree branches. Upon hatching, the larvae bore directly into the wood, initiating the excavation of feeding tunnels. The larval stage is highly prolonged, lasting several months to a year, during which they undergo multiple molts. Before pupation, the mature larva constructs a pupal chamber close to the outer bark. After undergoing metamorphosis, the fully formed adult chews a clean, circular exit hole to emerge during the summer.

Conservation status: Has not been evaluated globally by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), meaning it does not currently hold an official status on the Red List. On a regional scale, the species is abundant and secure, facing no significant threats. Due to its adaptability to agricultural environments, it is occasionally managed as a minor agricultural pest in citrus, fig, and peach orchards, where larval boring can cause limb dieback.
