Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Is a small and compact columbid bird that exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism, which is highly characteristic of its genus. Adult males display a striking rich rufous or cinnamon-brown plumage across their back, mantle, and underparts, contrasting sharply with a pale blue-gray crown and nape. Their wings feature prominent black spots on the coverts, and in flight, they reveal distinctive solid black underwing coverts, which serve as an essential diagnostic field mark. In contrast, adult females are much duller and cryptically colored, characterized by an overall sandy or grayish-brown coloration with paler underparts and less defined head contrast. Juveniles closely resemble adult females but present pale, scaly margins on their feathers. Both sexes measure approximately 5.9 to 7.1 inches in length and weigh between 1.2 and 1.9 ounces, featuring a short, dusky bill and pink legs.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely throughout the Neotropical region, ranging from the southern United States (as an occasional vagrant) and northern Mexico, south through Central America, and across much of South America down to northern Argentina, Uruguay, and central Chile. It is exceptionally abundant throughout Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela, demonstrating an impressive capacity to colonize new open areas created by human activities.

Habitat: Primarily frequents open and semi-open landscapes, forest edges, savannas, agricultural fields, and pastures. This species is highly adaptable to human-modified environments, being extremely common in suburban gardens, urban parks, orchards, and farmlands. It strictly avoids dense, continuous rainforests and closed-canopy woodlands, preferring ecotones and areas with bare or sparsely vegetated ground that facilitate easy walking and foraging.

Feeding: Sustains itself on a strictly granivorous diet, feeding on a wide variety of small seeds from grasses, herbaceous plants, and agricultural crops. It actively forages on the ground, walking with a rhythmic head-bobbing motion and pecking systematically. It occasionally supplements its diet with tiny invertebrates, such as small insects and snails, and regularly ingests grit or small pebbles to assist the gizzard in grinding down seeds.

Behavior: Typically encountered in pairs or small family groups, although it may assemble into larger flocks around abundant food sources or waterholes during the hottest hours of the day. Its flight is low, rapid, and direct, often producing a distinctive clapping or whistling sound with its wings upon taking off abruptly. It is a diurnal and highly terrestrial species, spending most of its active hours on the ground but retreating to low branches of trees and shrubs to rest, call, and roost.

Nesting: Breeds nearly year-round in tropical latitudes, capitalizing on the continuous availability of resources. The nest is a frail, cup-shaped platform constructed of dry twigs, rootlets, and grass stems, usually placed at low heights in shrubs, small trees, vines, or artificial structures such as ledges and hanging pots. The female typically lays two white, unmarked eggs. Both parents share incubation duties for a period of 11 to 13 days and cooperate in feeding the altricial chicks with crop milk, enabling the young to fledge rapidly within 10 to 14 days after hatching.

Conservation status: Is classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Its population trends are highly stable and expanding geographically, as the species benefits directly from deforestation and urban sprawl, which continuously generate new open-ground habitats suitable for colonization.
