Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This small and elegant columbid stands out due to its highly distinctive scalloped plumage pattern, with an average length ranging between 18 and 22 centimeters and a body mass of approximately 45 to 60 grams. Its overall plumage color is a pale grayish-brown, adorned with a delicate pinkish-buff wash on the breast and foreneck in adult birds of both sexes. The species´ most prominent diagnostic feature is the extensive dark scaling, caused by the fine black margins on almost every feather of the upperparts and breast, creating a beautiful and unique reticulated appearance. The throat is a clean pale white, while the dark tail feathers display prominent white tips on the outer rectrices, which become highly conspicuous when the tail is flared during flight or courtship displays. The eyes feature a reddish-brown iris surrounded by a narrow ring of bare bluish-gray skin, and the legs and feet are a bright coral pink.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across South America, presenting two distinct, geographically isolated populations. The northern population is restricted to the arid and semi-arid zones of northern Colombia and northern Venezuela. The much larger southern population spans a vast geographic range, covering almost the entirety of northeastern and central Brazil, extending southwards into São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul, westwards into the lowlands of eastern Bolivia, throughout the dry woodlands of the Paraguayan Chaco, and reaching its southernmost limits in northern Argentina, primarily in the provinces of Formosa, Chaco, and Misiones.

Habitat: It primarily occupies open and semi-open landscapes, showing an exceptional ecological preference for the xeric shrublands of the Caatinga and the woody savannas of the Cerrado. It has also proved highly successful in colonizing human-modified environments, including agricultural pastures, cultivated fields, rural roadsides, suburban gardens, and urban parks. The species systematically avoids dense humid forests, such as the interior of the Amazon basin, preferring areas where light penetrates to the ground and where temporary or permanent water sources are accessible.

Feeding: Operating as a strict granivore, this species relies on a diet composed almost exclusively of wild grass seeds, agricultural grain leftovers, and tiny herbaceous seeds. Foraging occurs entirely on the ground, where the bird walks with a characteristic rhythmic bobbing of the head, actively pecking at sandy or dusty substrates. It occasionally consumes tiny terrestrial invertebrates and regularly ingests small pebbles or coarse sand grains, which function as gastroliths in the gizzard to aid in mechanical digestion of tough seed coats.

Behavior: It is a highly terrestrial and gregarious bird, usually observed foraging in pairs or small family groups, though large flocks of dozens of individuals may gather around waterholes during the dry season. Its vocalization is a monotonous and melancholic three-syllable coo, frequently described as an iconic rhythmic chant in local folklore. When startled, it flushes rapidly and vertically, producing a loud, distinctive mechanical rattling sound with its wings, which serves as an auditory alarm signal to warn nearby conspecifics of potential predators.

Nesting: It exhibits a monogamous breeding system, with nesting activities potentially occurring year-round depending on local rainfall and food availability. The breeding pair constructs a very fragile, shallow platform of dry twigs, stems, and grass, typically positioned at low heights within thorny bushes, small tree forks, or artificial structures such as roof eaves and rafters. The female lays a clutch of two pure white eggs, which are incubated by both parents for a period of 13 to 14 days. The altricial chicks are initially fed with highly nutritious crop milk produced by both adults, allowing the young to develop rapidly and fledge the nest within 12 to 15 days after hatching.

Conservation status: It is evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Thanks to its remarkable ability to thrive in deforested areas, agricultural frontiers, and expanding urban spaces, its population is currently considered stable and, in many parts of its southern distribution, experiencing significant geographical expansion.
