Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by an extremely small body size, measuring between 5.5 and 6.3 inches (14 to 16 cm) in length and weighing a mere 24 to 36 grams, this taxon stands as one of the most diminutive columbids in the Americas. Sexual dimorphism is moderately pronounced. The adult male features a pale blue-grey crown and hindneck, with greyish-brown upperparts. Its breast and underparts are washed in a smooth, unpatterned vinaceous-pink, completely lacking the scaled or spotted breast appearance of its close relatives. Its wings are decorated with small, distinct purplish-blue iridescent spots on the wing coverts. In contrast, the female exhibits a much duller, uniform greyish-brown plumage overall. The bill is dark grey to blackish, and the legs are a delicate shade of pink.

Geographical distribution: Occurs in a fragmented and discontinuous pattern across the Neotropics. Its range extends from southern Mexico through several Central American nations, including Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, down into South America. In the southern continent, it is distributed across Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, and extensive regions of Brazil, particularly within the northeastern, central-western, and southeastern territories.

Habitat: Prefers semi-open, arid to semi-arid lowland environments, generally from sea level up to 3,300 feet (1,000 meters), although it can occasionally be found in dry inter-Andean valleys up to 6,900 feet (2,100 meters). It is frequently observed in savannas, thorny scrublands, dry forest borders, pastures, degraded agricultural lands, and second-growth clearings where bare ground and sparse herbaceous vegetation are prevalent.

Feeding: Exhibits a strictly granivorous diet, foraging actively on the ground. It consumes a wide variety of tiny seeds from grasses, weeds, and pioneer herbaceous plants. To facilitate the mechanical breakdown of these hard seeds within its gizzard, it regularly ingests small particles of grit and sand, which are crucial for its digestive process.

Behavior: Primarily terrestrial, this species spends most of its active hours walking briskly on the ground with jerky head movements. It is typically encountered in pairs or small family groups, though larger aggregations may form at rich feeding sites. Its flight is low, rapid, and direct; when startled, it flushes suddenly, producing a distinct whirring sound with its wings. The vocalization is a quiet, monotonous, and rising "coo-coo" call, often repeated at short intervals.

Nesting: Breeding seasons are highly variable and closely linked to local rainfall and food availability. It constructs a very fragile, saucer-shaped nest platform made of dry twigs, rootlets, and grass stems. This nest is situated close to the ground, usually under 3 feet (1 meter) of height in low bushes, tangled vegetation, or sometimes directly on the leaf-littered ground. The typical clutch consists of two white eggs. Both parents participate in incubating the eggs for 12 to 14 days and cooperate in feeding the altricial chicks with crop milk. The young fledgelines are ready to leave the nest about 10 to 14 days after hatching.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although its global population is considered stable and its geographical range is vast, certain localized populations are threatened by habitat degradation caused by intensive agriculture, pesticide applications, and rapid urban sprawl.
