Description

Is a small and stout columbid species measuring approximately 15 to 18 centimeters in length. It is characterized by a plumage that is predominantly blue-grey on the head and neck, shifting to a warmer greyish-brown on the back and wing coverts. The most prominent diagnostic feature of this taxon is the base of its bill, which displays a striking bright yellow or orange coloration, contrasting sharply with the black tip. Its legs are a vivid reddish-pink. In flight, it reveals a distinctive cinnamon or rufous patch on the underwing, along with small dark spots on the upper wing coverts. A subtle sexual dimorphism is present; males exhibit slightly brighter coloration with purplish-pink hues on the breast, whereas females and juveniles present a duller, more uniform brownish-grey appearance.

Geographical distribution: This species is native to the Pacific slope of South America. Its distribution range extends from western Ecuador, through almost the entire coastal region and inter-Andean valleys of Peru, to the extreme north of Chile, specifically in the Arica and Parinacota and Tarapacá regions. Additionally, stable populations have been recorded in the dry, temperate valleys of Bolivia, reaching elevations from sea level up to 3,000 meters in specific Andean valleys.

Habitat: It occupies a wide variety of arid, semi-arid, and heavily anthropized ecosystems. It is commonly found in agricultural valleys, xerophytic scrublands, equatorial dry forests, as well as in urban parks, residential gardens, crop fields, and suburban areas. This highly adaptable species tolerates and benefits from landscape fragmentation and human presence, where it easily finds artificial water sources and nesting sites.

Feeding: Its diet is strictly granivorous. It feeds on a vast selection of seeds from herbaceous plants, grasses, and agricultural crops such as sorghum, wheat, and millet. Occasionally, it supplements its diet with tender shoots, fallen fruits, and tiny invertebrates found on the ground surface. It also consumes small pebbles or gastroliths to aid in the mechanical breakdown of seeds inside its gizzard.

Behavior: It is primarily terrestrial, spending most of the day walking actively on the ground foraging for food with characteristic rhythmic head-bobbing. It is a highly gregarious bird, usually observed in pairs or flocks of dozens of individuals, particularly around water sources or abundant feeding grounds. Its flight is low, rapid, and direct, producing a distinct whistling sound with its wings upon takeoff. Its vocalization is highly distinctive: it emits a dry, raspy, guttural sound similar to a croak or frog-like rasp, which is repeated rhythmically during courtship or territorial displays.

Nesting: The breeding season can extend throughout the entire year, provided that weather conditions and food availability are favorable. It builds a very simple and fragile platform nest constructed of fine dry twigs, rootlets, and dry grass. This nest is situated at low heights in dense shrubs, ornamental trees, cacti, or even on human structures such as ledges and utility poles. The typical clutch consists of two pure white eggs. Both parents share incubation duties, which last approximately 12 to 14 days, as well as the feeding of the altricial chicks with a secretion known as crop milk during their first days of development.

Conservation status: It is classified under the Least Concern (LC) category according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Its population is considered stable and even expanding in several parts of its range due to its outstanding ecological plasticity and its success in colonizing urban and agricultural environments modified by human activity.
