Description


This is a small, quiet passerine bird belonging to the tyrant flycatcher family, known for its compact profile and inconspicuous behavior within the forest understory. It measures approximately 12 to 13 centimeters in length and weighs about 11 grams. The upperparts are wrapped in a uniform grayish-brown plumage, while the underparts transition to a pale gray on the breast and a soft yellowish or buff color on the belly. Its most diagnostic physical attribute is its very short, slender black bill, which is noticeably smaller than those of related species. In addition, its wings feature two conspicuous cinnamon-rufous wingbars that act as reliable field marks in the dimly lit interior of its forest habitats.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the southern temperate regions of South America. Its breeding range encompasses southern Chile, extending from the Valparaíso region south to Tierra del Fuego, as well as southwestern Argentina, spanning from Neuquén province to the southernmost tip of the continent. During the harsh austral winter, it undertakes a seasonal migration northward, occupying wintering grounds in central Chile and lower-altitude shrublands in western and northern Argentina.

Habitat: It primarily frequents temperate rainforests, showing an evolutionary dependency on Valdivian and subantarctic forest ecosystems dominated by Nothofagus beech trees such as coigüe, lenga, and ñire. It is heavily reliant on a dense, well-preserved understory characterized by thickets of colihue bamboo (Chusquea culeou) and native shrubs. During the non-breeding season, it adapts to more open habitats, including sclerophyllous scrub, humid ravines, and secondary woodland margins.

Feeding: Its diet is predominantly insectivorous. It feeds on a diverse array of small invertebrates, including flies, beetles, wasps, and various insect larvae. The species utilizes active foraging strategies such as sally-gleaning and aerial flycatching, darting briefly from a low perch to snatch insects from the air or from the surface of leaves and twigs before returning to its original branch.

Behavior: Generally observed as a solitary individual or in pairs, this species maintains an upright, attentive posture while perched. It exhibits a distinctive diagnostic behavior of flicking or shivering its tail vertically upon landing on a branch. Its vocalizations are subtle and consist of a high-pitched, thin, descending whistle that easily blends into the background noise of the forest. It rarely joins mixed-species foraging flocks, preferring the safety of dense foliage.

Nesting: The breeding cycle takes place between October and January. The nest is a neatly crafted, small, open cup built in the fork of a branch or within dense foliage. Construction materials include mosses, lichens, and fine plant fibers, bound together securely with spider webs. The inner cup is lined with soft feathers and animal hair for thermal regulation. The female typically lays 2 to 3 creamy-white eggs speckled with brownish or reddish-brown spots. Both parents cooperate in incubating the eggs and provisioning the nestlings.

Conservation status: It is currently assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. While its global population is considered stable and it remains common in pristine habitats, it is vulnerable to local declines driven by the fragmentation of native temperate forests, wildfires, and the conversion of native woodlands into commercial exotic forestry plantations.
