Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Stands out as one of the most distinctive and elegant members of the tanager family, recognized by its slender profile and conspicuously long, graduated tail. It measures approximately 9.8 to 11.8 inches (25 to 30 centimeters) in total length, with its tail feathers accounting for nearly half of its stature. The plumage presents a striking, high-contrast, bi-colored pattern: the head, neck, throat, and upper breast are enveloped in a glossy, blue-black hood with iridescent reflections. In contrast, the belly, flanks, rump, and thighs are pure white. The wings are mostly black with prominent white patches, and the long tail feathers feature broad, white tips. Its eyes are characterized by a striking bright yellow iris, while the bill is thick, conical, and solid black. There is no notable sexual dimorphism, as both males and females exhibit identical coloration and physical proportions.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a vast geographic range across South America. It is widely distributed from eastern Colombia, southern and eastern Venezuela, and the Guianas, extending southward through Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, across most of Brazil (particularly in the Amazon and Paraná basins), to eastern Paraguay and northeastern Argentina in the Misiones province.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits humid tropical and subtropical lowland forests, forest edges, secondary growth areas, clearings, and wooded parks or gardens. It shows a strong preference for ecotones and disturbed canopy edges rather than deep, continuous old-growth forest. Its altitudinal range extends from sea level up to approximately 6,500 feet (2,000 meters), although it is far more common in regions below 3,300 feet (1,000 meters).

Feeding: Maintains an omnivorous and highly opportunistic diet. It feeds on a diverse array of wild fruits, berries, and seeds, which it supplements with animal protein by foraging for insects (such as beetles, caterpillars, and grasshoppers) and spiders gleaned from leaves and branches. It has also been documented feeding on nectar from larger flowers.

Behavior: Is a highly social and conspicuous species that is rarely seen alone, typically moving in pairs, family groups of three to six individuals, or as part of active mixed-species feeding flocks. They traverse the canopy and mid-story with an undulating flight, maintaining constant communication through a series of metallic squeaks, loud whistles, and chattering calls.

Nesting: Involves the construction of a bulky, open-cup nest made of twigs, dry leaves, rootlets, and moss, typically well-hidden at low to medium heights in dense shrubs or small trees. The clutch consists of two to three eggs, which are white or cream-colored and heavily speckled with reddish-brown and lilac spots. Both parents participate in incubating the eggs and feeding the nestlings.

Conservation status: Is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although habitat fragmentation and deforestation pose ongoing threats, its population remains stable due to its adaptability to disturbed environments, secondary forests, and edge habitats.
