Belongs to the stork family Ciconiidae and stands as one of the largest wading birds in the Neotropical region, reaching an average height of 38 to 47 inches and a wingspan that can exceed 71 inches. Its plumage is predominantly stark white, contrasting sharply with its glossy black primary and secondary flight feathers. A key diagnostic feature is the patch of bare, bright orange-red skin surrounding its pale yellow eyes. The heavy, robust bill is slightly upturned at the tip, showing a bluish-gray coloration at the base that transitions to reddish-brown or dark gray toward the tip. Its long legs are a vivid bright red, perfectly adapted for wading through mud and shallow waters. Unlike other South American storks, its neck remains fully feathered in pristine white, lacking any dark bare patches on the head or upper neck area.
Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across South America, primarily east of the Andes Mountains. Its geographical range extends from the seasonally flooded savannas of Colombia and Venezuela (the Llanos region), southward through central and southern Brazil (including the Pantanal), Paraguay, Uruguay, and down into the wet pampas and northern Patagonia regions of Argentina. While some populations are sedentary, others undertake local seasonal migrations driven by rainfall patterns and water level fluctuations, dispersing across major river basins and lowland grasslands.
Habitat: Inhabits a variety of open wetland ecosystems, including seasonally flooded grasslands, freshwater marshes, wet savannas, shallow lagoons, lake margins, and agricultural landscapes such as flooded rice paddies. It exhibits a strong preference for open areas with low to moderate herbaceous vegetation, which allows for unobstructed movement while foraging. The species generally avoids dense forested areas and closed-canopy woodlands, restricting its presence to open biomes where water levels remain shallow enough for wading.
Feeding: Possesses an opportunistic and highly carnivorous diet, utilizing its large bill to capture a wide array of aquatic and terrestrial prey. It hunts by walking slowly through shallow water or damp vegetation, striking rapidly when prey is detected. Its main food sources consist of fish, amphibians (frogs and tadpoles), small reptiles such as snakes and lizards, crustaceans like crabs, and an assortment of large insects including aquatic beetles and grasshoppers. On occasion, it will also opportunistically consume small rodents and the nestlings of ground-nesting waterbirds.
Behavior: Exhibits primarily diurnal habits and is most frequently observed foraging alone, in breeding pairs, or in small family groups, though it can aggregate into larger flocks during the dry season around receding pools of water where prey becomes concentrated. It is an exceptionally strong flier, frequently utilizing thermal updrafts to soar to great altitudes with its neck and legs fully outstretched. Although generally quiet, adults engage in a loud, rhythmic bill-clattering display during courtship and territorial interactions, which serves as their primary mode of acoustic communication due to their lack of a functional syrinx.
Nesting: Breeding activity of Ciconia maguari is closely tied to the onset of the rainy season or periods of optimal water depth, which ensure a high abundance of food. This stork constructs massive, heavy nests made of dry branches, reeds, and grasses. These structures are built either directly on the ground in flooded marshes to deter terrestrial predators, or situated in low bushes and small trees. They may nest as isolated pairs or in loose colonial groups. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 4 chalky white eggs. Both parents share incubation duties, which last approximately 29 to 32 days, and cooperate extensively in feeding the semi-altricial chicks, which are born with a dark downy coat that gradually lightens before they fledge.
Conservation status: Currently listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The species maintains a large overall population and an extensive distribution range; however, local populations face ongoing challenges. The primary threats to its long-term survival include habitat loss and degradation resulting from the drainage of wetlands, agricultural intensification, the use of pesticides, and water pollution across its core Neotropical distribution.
