Geographic Distribution: It is widely distributed throughout much of Canada and the United States, making it one of the most broadly distributed turtles on the continent. Its range extends from southern Canadian provinces to parts of the southern United States, occupying a vast network of watersheds and freshwater systems. Several recognized subspecies exhibit geographic and morphological differences associated with local environmental conditions. Habitat: This species primarily inhabits ponds, lakes, marshes, swamps, slow-moving rivers, reservoirs, drainage canals, and other freshwater environments rich in aquatic vegetation. It generally favors calm waters with soft substrates and abundant basking sites such as logs, branches, rocks, and artificial structures. Nearby terrestrial areas are important for nesting and seasonal movements. Throughout much of the year, individuals spend considerable time basking in the sun, an essential behavior for maintaining proper body temperature and physiological function.
Diet: It is an omnivorous and opportunistic species, with dietary preferences that change throughout its life. Juveniles consume a higher proportion of animal prey, including aquatic insects, larvae, crustaceans, mollusks, tadpoles, and other small invertebrates. As they mature, plant material becomes increasingly important, including aquatic vegetation, algae, seeds, leaves, and stems. Individuals may also consume carrion and other readily available food resources. This dietary flexibility contributes greatly to the species´ ecological success across diverse freshwater habitats.
Behavior: Primarily diurnal, it is particularly well known for its extensive basking behavior. Multiple individuals are often observed sharing logs or exposed structures, from which they quickly dive into the water when disturbed. It is an excellent swimmer capable of moving efficiently both in water and on land. During colder months, it enters a period of brumation, typically remaining on the bottoms of ponds or within protected underwater refuges. One of its most remarkable adaptations is its ability to tolerate extremely cold conditions, allowing populations to persist in northern regions where relatively few turtle species can survive.
Reproduction: This oviparous species breeds mainly during spring and early summer. Females temporarily leave aquatic habitats to locate suitable nesting sites, often selecting sunny areas with soft or sandy soils. Under favorable conditions, multiple clutches may be laid during a single season. Incubation length varies according to temperature and moisture levels. As in many turtle species, incubation temperature plays a significant role in determining the sex of hatchlings. Young turtles emerge fully independent and receive no parental care after hatching.
Conservation Status: It is currently classified as Least Concern due to its broad geographic distribution, large population size, and considerable ecological adaptability. Nevertheless, some local populations may be affected by wetland destruction, water pollution, road mortality during overland movements, and collection for the pet trade. The preservation of healthy and connected freshwater ecosystems remains essential for ensuring the long-term stability of the species.
