This is a medium-sized larid that reaches a total body length of 38 to 44 centimeters and a wingspan of approximately 100 to 115 centimeters. During the breeding season, adults display a distinctive pale grey hood covering the head, which is bordered at the back by a narrow, darker collar on the nape. The mantle and upperwings are a soft ash-grey, while the neck, underparts, and tail are pure white. The primary wing feathers are predominantly black with conspicuous white mirrors near the wingtips, forming a highly diagnostic pattern visible in flight that easily distinguishes Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus from other sympatric gulls. The bill, legs, and orbital ring are a striking deep crimson red, contrasting sharply with a pale yellow or cream-colored iris. In non-breeding plumage, the grey hood is lost, leaving only a dark smudge behind the eye, and the bill and legs may become somewhat duller or more orange-red.
Geographical distribution: It exhibits a remarkably disjunct breeding distribution across two separate continents divided by the Atlantic Ocean. In South America, its range extends along the Pacific coast from central Ecuador and Peru to central Chile, and on the Atlantic side from northeastern Brazil southward through Paraguay, Uruguay, to central Argentina. Across the Atlantic, the species is widely distributed throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, inhabiting major inland lake systems of the Great Rift Valley, coastal West and East Africa, and extending to the island of Madagascar.
Habitat: It occupies a broad spectrum of aquatic environments, showing a strong affinity for both coastal marine zones and inland freshwater systems of low altitude. Common habitats include estuaries, coastal lagoons, intertidal mudflats, and sandy beaches. Inland, it frequently colonizes large freshwater lakes, rivers, marshes, alkali flats, sewage treatment ponds, and flooded agricultural fields, demonstrating a high degree of ecological plasticity in human-dominated landscapes.
Feeding: As an opportunistic omnivore, this bird boasts an extremely diverse diet that shifts according to seasonal prey availability. Its primary food sources include small fish, aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans, mollusks, and a wide variety of terrestrial and aquatic insects. It also regularly scavenges on fish offal at harbors, refuse at open landfills, and organic waste near urban areas. Additionally, it frequently engages in kleptoparasitism, aggressively harassing other seabirds, particularly terns, to steal their freshly caught prey in mid-air.
Behavior: It is a highly gregarious species that performs almost all of its daily activities, such as foraging and roosting, within flocks that can range from dozens to thousands of individuals. Its flight is light, buoyant, and agile. It is an extremely vocal bird, producing harsh, raucous, crow-like calls used for territorial defense and social communication. While tropical populations are generally sedentary or display nomadic local movements linked to rainfall patterns, populations breeding in temperate regions of South America undergo northward migratory movements during the austral winter to reach warmer waters.
Nesting: Breeding occurs colonially, often in dense, single-species colonies or mixed-species aggregations alongside other gulls and terns. The nest is constructed on the ground, situated on sandy beaches, muddy shores, or nestled within dense marsh vegetation such as reeds. The nest structure ranges from a simple scrape lined with dry grass to a substantial platform constructed from twigs, aquatic weeds, and grass. A typical clutch consists of 2 to 3 eggs, which are olive-green or buff-colored and heavily blotched with dark brown spots. Both parents share incubation duties for a period of 21 to 25 days, and both actively participate in rearing and feeding the semi-precocial chicks through regurgitation.
Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This classification is supported by its extremely large geographical range and a globally stable population. However, localized populations face threats from habitat degradation due to coastal development, pollution from agricultural runoff, plastic ingestion, and human disturbance at key nesting sites, which can lead to localized colony abandonment.
