Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Exhibits a compact body and a highly colorful plumage that shows pronounced sexual dimorphism. Adult males measure approximately 11 centimeters (4.3 inches) in length and weigh between 11 and 15 grams. They are characterized by a bright green mantle, a striking sky-blue crown and nape, a blue eye-ring, and a vibrant golden-yellow breast and belly. In contrast, females display a duller coloration, dominated by olive-green tones, with a less defined blue nape and a paler yellowish-green underbelly. The beak is short, robust, and grayish, adapted perfectly for handling small berries.

Geographical distribution: Occurs in a disjunct distribution across several mountainous regions of South America. Its range primarily encompasses the slopes of the Andean Mountains from northern Venezuela and Colombia, stretching south through Ecuador, Peru, to northwestern Bolivia. Additionally, isolated populations reside in the Guiana Highlands, and a large population inhabits the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina.

Habitat: Inhabits the canopy and edges of humid montane forests, cloud forests, mature secondary growth, and shaded agricultural areas, such as coffee plantations. Its altitudinal range generally spans between 500 and 2,200 meters (1,600 to 7,200 feet) above sea level, though some populations in the Atlantic Forest region perform seasonal altitudinal migrations, descending to lower elevations during winter months in search of food.

Feeding: Is a specialized frugivore, showing a strong dietary preference for the berries of mistletoes from the Loranthaceae family. It supplements this specialized diet with various small fruits from genera such as Ficus and Cecropia, as well as nectar, flower buds, and occasionally small insects plucked from the underside of leaves or branches in the upper canopy.

Behavior: Moves actively through the canopy either solitary, in pairs, or in small family groups, often joining mixed-species foraging flocks of other tanagers and honeycreepers. Its flight is fast and undulating. It utters soft, high-pitched, double-whistled calls represented as a clear "fee-fee", which help individuals maintain contact with each other while foraging inside dense foliage.

Nesting: Builds a distinctive dome-shaped nest with a small lateral entrance, which is highly unusual compared to other related species. The nest is constructed using green moss, fine rootlets, lichens, and spider webs, making it almost invisible among epiphytes, bromeliads, or mossy tree branches. The female typically lays two to three white eggs speckled with reddish-brown spots. While incubation is carried out primarily by the female, both parents actively provision the altricial chicks after hatching.

Conservation status: Is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although the global population is considered stable and occupies a vast geographic range, certain localized populations are threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation, infrastructure development, and occasional pressure from the illegal pet trade due to its attractive colors.
