Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by its robust silhouette and a large, dagger-like black bill, this medium-to-large representative of the Alcedinidae family is highly specialized for aquatic hunting. It reaches an average length of 29 to 30 centimeters and weighs between 110 and 140 grams. The upperparts display a striking metallic bronze-green coloration, which stands out against a clean white collar. Sexual dimorphism is prominent in this species: the male features a broad, conspicuous rufous-chestnut breast band over white underparts, whereas the female lacks this warm coloration, showing instead green patches on the sides of the breast that occasionally form an incomplete band. It possesses a short, bushy crest on its head, dark brown eyes, and weak, syndactyl black feet.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a vast geographic range throughout the Neotropics. Its distribution extends from southern Mexico (including the Yucatán Peninsula) southward through Central America to South America. Within the South American continent, it is widely distributed east of the Andes, reaching as far south as central Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. It is predominantly a sedentary species, with populations remaining in their established territories throughout the year without undergoing seasonal migrations.

Habitat: Strongly associated with lowland, freshwater aquatic environments. It is commonly found along slow-flowing rivers, streams, freshwater lagoons, forested swamps, and occasionally brackish mangroves. The species prefers clear or moderately clear waters bordered by dense riparian vegetation with overhanging branches close to the water surface, which serve as essential vantage points for hunting while avoiding fast-flowing, turbulent mountain torrents.

Feeding: Feeds almost exclusively on small to medium-sized fish, supplemented occasionally by aquatic crustaceans and large water insects. Hunting is conducted primarily from a low, shaded perch overhanging the water. Utilizing its keen eyesight corrected for water refraction, it spots its prey and executes a swift, steep plunge-dive into the water, momentarily disappearing beneath the surface. Upon securing the prey in its powerful bill, it returns to the perch, beats the prey against the branch to stun it, and swallows it headfirst.

Behavior: Typically encountered singly or in monogamous pairs that defend linear territories along riverbanks. Its flight is fast, direct, and low over the water surface, often accompanied by a distinctive, loud harsh, rattling call or sharp metallic clicks. It is highly territorial, actively chasing away conspecifics and other kingfisher species from its feeding zone. When perched, it frequently jerks its tail upward and bobs its head, particularly when agitated or detecting potential threats.

Nesting: Nesting begins with the excavation of a horizontal burrow in vertical earth or clay banks overlooking water bodies, a location that offers protection against terrestrial predators. Both male and female excavate this tunnel, which can measure between 1 and 1.6 meters in length, ending in a spacious nesting chamber. The female lays a clutch of 3 to 4 glossy white eggs. Both parents share incubation duties for approximately 22 days. The altricial chicks are fed regurgitated food and small whole fish by both adults, eventually fledging after about 30 days of rearing.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global population has not been precisely quantified, it is described as widespread and locally common. However, local declines can occur due to habitat loss, river pollution, sedimentation from deforestation, and the reduction of suitable nesting banks along waterways.
