Description


Characterized by a robust and stocky silhouette, this medium-sized finch measures between 14 and 16 centimeters in length, possesses a wingspan ranging from 24.5 to 27.5 centimeters, and weighs approximately 25 to 34 grams. It features a stout, conical, and powerful bill colored in a pale pinkish-horn tone, which is highly adapted for cracking tough seeds. This species exhibits distinct sexual dimorphism: the adult male displays a vibrant olive-green plumage with prominent bright yellow patches on the outer primary flight feathers and the edges of the tail. In contrast, the female is considerably duller, showing mostly greyish-brown tones with much less conspicuous yellow highlights, while juveniles are overall streaked with brown and grey.

Geographical distribution: It is native to the Western Palearctic, with a breeding range extending across Europe, North Africa, and Southwest Asia (reaching as far east as northern Iran). Additionally, humans have introduced this bird to several other parts of the world, resulting in well-established feral populations in New Zealand, southeastern Australia, and parts of South America, particularly in Uruguay and eastern Argentina.

Habitat: This bird prefers open and semi-open woodlands, avoiding dense, unbroken forests. It is highly adaptable and frequently found in forest edges, agricultural countryside with mature hedgerows, orchards, cemeteries, urban parks, and suburban gardens. The presence of dense shrubs, evergreen hedges, or coniferous trees is essential, as these structures provide necessary shelter and nesting sites.

Feeding: It is predominantly a granivorous specialist, possessing a diet centered around a wide variety of seeds from both herbaceous plants and trees. It shows a strong preference for oil-rich seeds, such as those of sunflowers, dandelions, rosehips, yew, and various conifers. During the breeding season, it supplements this plant-based diet with small invertebrates, including aphids and caterpillars, which provide the essential proteins required for the rapid growth of its nestlings.

Behavior: Highly social and gregarious, Chloris chloris often congratulates in large, noisy flocks outside of the breeding season, sometimes mixing with other finch species. Its flight is strongly undulating, characterized by rapid wingbeats interspersed with short glides. The male’s song is a diverse mix of liquid trills and warbles, interspersed with a highly distinctive, wheezy, drawn-out "dzwee" nasal note, which is typically delivered from a prominent treetop song-post or during a butterfly-like display flight.

Nesting: Breeding activity occurs from April to August, during which pairs can successfully raise two or three broods. The female builds a bulky, cup-shaped nest placed within the dense foliage of a shrub, hedge, or coniferous tree, using twigs, moss, and grass, and lining it with hair, wool, and feathers. A typical clutch consists of 4 to 6 pale blue eggs marked with reddish-brown spots. Incubation is performed solely by the female and lasts for 12 to 14 days, after which both parents cooperatively feed the nestlings until they fledge at 13 to 16 days of age.

Conservation status: It is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List due to its extremely large geographic range and stable global population trends. However, some localized populations have recently experienced significant declines due to epidemic outbreaks of trichomonosis, a parasitic infection spread primarily at unhygienic garden bird feeders, prompting conservationists to recommend regular cleaning of feeding stations.
