Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This small and highly active avian species measures between 3.1 and 3.9 inches (8 to 10 centimeters) in length and weighs approximately 3.5 to 6 grams. Its upperparts are dominated by a shining golden-green coloration, which transitions to a glittering emerald-green on the throat and breast. A distinctive white line runs down the center of its breast and abdomen, separating the bright green flanks. The bill is straight and medium-sized, with a black upper mandible and a pinkish-red lower mandible tipped in black. Tail feathers are mostly bronze-green or dark blackish-green, with subtle pale tips on the outer feathers. Females generally resemble males but often exhibit a more speckled throat with white feathers and slightly less intense metallic iridescence.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across the northern and central regions of South America. Its range encompasses countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, northeastern Argentina, and is highly abundant throughout Brazil, especially in the Amazon basin and Atlantic forest biomes. It occurs mainly at lower altitudes, from sea level up to 3,600 feet (1,100 meters), occasionally reaching higher elevations in inter-Andean valleys.

Habitat: This adaptable bird occupies a diverse range of semi-open environments, actively avoiding the dark interior of dense, primary rainforests. It is commonly found in forest edges, savannas, scrublands, agricultural areas, secondary growth, urban parks, and suburban gardens. It thrives in anthropogenically altered environments as long as sufficient flowering vegetation is available.

Feeding: Primarily nectarivorous, it feeds on the nectar of a wide variety of flowering plants, showing a preference for tubular flowers belonging to families like Acanthaceae, Bromeliaceae, Fabaceae, and Myrtaceae. It acts as an important pollinator in its ecosystem. To fulfill its nutritional requirements for proteins, it also acts as an active insectivore, catching midges, flies, and small spiders in mid-air or gleaning them from foliage.

Behavior: It is a diurnal, solitary, and highly territorial species. It defends rich nectar sources and flowering trees aggressively against other hummingbird species, larger insects, and intruders. Its flight is incredibly agile and fast, utilizing a high wingbeat frequency that enables hovering flight and rapid multi-directional maneuvering, which are critical for both feeding and territorial defense.

Nesting: Breeding responsibilities are carried out solely by the female. She constructs a delicate, cup-shaped nest using fine plant fibers, moss, and spiderwebs, the latter serving as a binding agent that allows the nest to stretch as the chicks grow. The exterior is camouflaged with lichens to blend with the supporting branch, typically situated on a horizontal fork between 3 and 13 feet (1 to 4 meters) above the ground. The female typically lays two white eggs, which she incubates for 14 to 16 days. The altricial chicks are fed by regurgitation and fledge after approximately 20 days.

Conservation status: It is listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The species maintains a large, stable population and is not currently facing any immediate threats of extinction, largely due to its remarkable adaptability to human-modified landscapes and urbanized areas.
