Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by a robust, dove-like silhouette, this medium-sized non-passerine landbird is the only family endemic to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions, scientifically named Chionis albus. It features an entirely snow-white plumage that provides an absolute contrast against its bare facial skin. The heavy, conical bill is pinkish-gray at the base and covered by a yellow-greenish horny sheath, which gives the group its common name. Around the eyes and across the cheeks, it displays prominent, fleshy pink caruncles or wattles. The legs are sturdy, short, bluish-gray, and lack webbed feet, emphasizing its terrestrial nature. Adults typically measure between 13.4 and 16.1 inches in length, boast a wingspan of 29.1 to 33.1 inches, and weigh between 1.01 and 1.72 pounds, with males being slightly larger and heavier than females.

Geographical distribution: Breeds exclusively in the southern hemisphere, particularly along the Antarctic Peninsula, the South Shetland Islands, the South Orkney Islands, South Georgia, and the South Sandwich Islands. During the harsh winter months, a significant portion of the population undergoes a northern migration, reaching the shores of the Falkland Islands, southern Patagonia in Argentina and Chile, with occasional vagrants spotted as far north as Uruguay and southern Brazil.

Habitat: Prefers rugged coastal environments, rocky shorelines, gravel beaches, and cliffs free of permanent ice during the breeding season. It is critically associated with penguin rookeries and breeding colonies of pinnipeds (such as elephant seals and fur seals). It avoids inland glaciers, remaining restricted entirely to narrow coastal strips where organic resources are highly concentrated.

Feeding: Exhibits a highly opportunistic, omnivorous, and predatory diet, functioning as a key scavenger in polar coastal food webs. It is well-known for its aggressive kleptoparasitism, stealing krill and regurgitated fish directly from the gapes of penguins feeding their chicks. It also consumes unattended eggs and chicks, seal placentae, carrion, marine invertebrates exposed by the tides, and regularly practices coprophagy, feeding on seal and penguin feces to extract remaining nutrients.

Behavior: Distinctive for its active walking gait, constantly bobbing its head in a pigeon-like manner. Although it possesses strong flight capabilities capable of enduring long oceanic migrations, it spends most of its time on the ground. It is remarkably bold, inquisitive, and exhibits virtually no fear of humans, frequently investigating scientific stations and gear. Vocalizations consist of harsh, guttural chatters and sharp scolding calls used to defend foraging territories.

Nesting: Breeding occurs during the short austral summer, spanning from November to January. It places its nests in deep rock crevices, caves, under large boulders, or within abandoned petrel burrows, providing defense against predators and severe winds. The nest is a messy accumulation of tussock grass, feathers, shells, bones, and dried guano. A typical clutch contains 2 to 3 cream-colored eggs blotched with dark brown. Both parents share incubation duties for a period of 28 to 32 days. Due to intense sibling aggression and food limitations, usually only the oldest chick survives to fledge.

Conservation status: Listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global population is relatively stable, its reliance on specific colonial seabirds and marine mammals makes it vulnerable to local ecological disruptions, environmental pollution, tourism-related disturbances, and the potential introduction of infectious diseases like avian influenza.
