Features a domed, heavy carapace ranging in color from yellowish-brown to dark grey, with distinct growth rings on each scute that often exhibit darker margins. The carapace length typically measures between 20 and 32 centimeters, with females generally achieving larger dimensions than males. Sexual dimorphism is also evident in the plastron, which is distinctly concave in adult males to facilitate mating, and they also possess a longer tail. The limbs are sturdy, elephantine, and covered with prominent, thick ossified scales on the anterior surface, facilitating their burrowing activities.
Geographical distribution: Is restricted to the southern portion of South America, with a native range encompassing the dry plains of western Paraguay, southeastern Bolivia, and a vast territory within Argentina. This distribution stretches from the northern subtropical provinces down to northern Patagonia, specifically in the provinces of Río Negro and Chubut, marking the southernmost distribution of any tortoise species globally.
Habitat: Primarily colonizes dry, open environments, showing a preference for the Dry Chaco, Espinal, and Monte biogeographical provinces. The species thrives in areas with loose, sandy, or well-drained soils that allow for burrowing, and is closely associated with xerophytic shrublands, thorny deciduous forests, and grasslands characterized by drought-resistant vegetation such as Prosopis and Larrea species.
Feeding: Exhibits a predominantly herbivorous diet, acting as an opportunistic generalist. It feeds on a wide variety of grasses, herbaceous plants, fallen leaves, and seasonal fruits. A highly significant portion of its water and nutritional intake comes from cacti, particularly species of the genus Opuntia, consuming both the pads and the fleshy fruits. On rare occasions, it may ingest soil, small bones, or snail shells to supplement essential minerals like calcium.
Behavior: Is an ectothermic organism whose daily and seasonal activity patterns are heavily regulated by environmental temperatures. It displays a diurnal activity pattern, shifting to bimodal or crepuscular habits during the intense heat of summer. To survive freezing winter temperatures and extreme summer heat, it excavates deep shelters or utilizes existing burrows, entering a state of brumation during the winter months to conserve energy.
Reproduction: Begins its breeding cycle in early spring when males engage in competitive interactions and elaborate courtship rituals, which include rapid head-bobbing, shell-ramming, and biting the female´s limbs. After successful copulation, the female excavates a flask-shaped nest chamber in loose soil using her hind limbs, depositing a clutch of 1 to 6 eggs with hard, calcareous shells. Incubation is highly variable and can last from 8 to over 14 months due to embryonic diapause, an adaptation that delays development until optimal environmental conditions occur.
Conservation status: Is classified as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List. The taxon faces severe threats from historical overexploitation for the domestic and international illegal pet trade, coupled with ongoing habitat fragmentation and loss caused by agricultural expansion, livestock overgrazing, and wildfires across its natural range.
