Description


Belongs to a specialized group of sap-sucking hemipteran insects characterized by the unique protective mechanism employed during their immature stages. Adults of this taxon exhibit a robust, stout body shape, measuring approximately 12 to 15 millimeters in length. Their general coloration is highly cryptic, consisting of mottled shades of grayish-brown, ochre, and dark charcoal, which allows them to blend seamlessly with dry twigs, bark, and dead leaves. The head is broad, featuring prominent compound eyes and short, bristle-like antennae. The forewings, known as tegmina, are leathery, textured, and held roof-like over the abdomen when at rest. The most diagnostic and fascinating feature occurs in the nymphal stage, which produces a dense, bright white, frothy foam mass. This substance is generated by mixing liquid excrement, mucilaginous secretions from specialized abdominal glands, and air pumped through specialized ventral breathing tubes, effectively cloaking the nymph in what resembles human saliva.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the Neotropical region. Its geographical range spans a significant portion of South America, including countries such as Brazil (with dense populations in the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest biomes), Argentina (northern and central provinces), Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, and northern Andean regions of Colombia and Venezuela. It demonstrates a remarkable ecological adaptability across different elevations and thermal regimes.

Habitat: Colonizes a diverse array of environments, ranging from dry forests and shrubby savannas to agricultural borders, urban parks, and domestic gardens. It shows a strong affinity for areas with a high density of woody host plants and shrubs, adjusting easily to disturbed or anthropogenic landscapes provided there is an abundance of suitable vegetation for feeding and egg-laying.

Feeding: Is a strictly phytophagous insect that feeds on plant fluids. Equipped with specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts, both nymphs and adults penetrate plant tissues to access the xylem vessels, drawing up large volumes of sap. Because xylem fluid is nutrient-poor, the insect must process immense quantities of liquid, extracting amino acids and minerals while expelling the excess water, which is then utilized by the nymphs to form their characteristic frothy shelters. Preferred hosts include trees and shrubs of the family Fabaceae (such as Acacia, Erythrina, and Mimosa species) as well as Myrtaceae and various ornamental woody plants.

Behavior: Exhibits highly gregarious tendencies during the nymphal stages, with multiple individuals often sharing a single large mass of foam to prevent desiccation and deter predators like birds, ants, and parasitic wasps. Adults are solitary and highly mobile, possessing powerful hind legs adapted for jumping explosive distances when threatened. They are competent flyers, though they primarily rely on visual crypsis to escape detection, remaining completely motionless on branches for extended periods during daylight hours.

Reproduction: Begins during the warmer, high-humidity months of spring and summer, when mating occurs on the branches of host plants. Females use a sharp, saw-like ovipositor to insert eggs endophitically into slits in the soft bark, petioles, or leaf tissues. Upon hatching, the young nymphs immediately migrate to tender stems to begin feeding and generating their protective spittle mass. The nymphs progress through five distinct instars, shedding their exoskeletons inside the protective foam before emerging as fully winged, sexually mature adults.

Conservation status: Has not been evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and does not currently hold any formal conservation status. It is considered a common and highly resilient species, sometimes viewed as a minor agricultural or horticultural pest due to the aesthetic damage and localized branch dieback caused by heavy feeding aggregations.
