Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Vulnerable

Description

Characterized by a medium-sized anatomy measuring approximately 27 to 28 centimeters in length. It displays a spectacular, fiery red crest and a contrasting cinnamon-buff coloration on its face, throat, and neck sides. The upperparts are predominantly black, whereas the underparts exhibit a complex, dense pattern of black and buffish-cream bars. This bird is famous in evolutionary biology due to its remarkable interspecific mimicry, closely resembling larger sympatric species such as Campephilus robustus and Dryocopus lineatus to reduce aggressive interactions and predation risks within its forest canopy habitat.

Geographical distribution: Restricted to the highly threatened Atlantic Forest biome of South America. Its range encompasses northeastern Argentina (primarily localized within the Misiones province), eastern Paraguay, and southeastern Brazil, stretching from Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo southwards to Rio Grande do Sul. Its population is severely fragmented and isolated due to historical land-use changes.

Habitat: Primarily occurs in pristine subtropical and tropical lowland moist forests, as well as montane evergreen forests. It shows a strong ecological preference for mature primary forests and well-preserved, tall secondary growth. The presence of large decaying trees and dense patches of native bamboo, particularly of the genus Guadua, is critical for its occurrence. It is rarely recorded in monoculture plantations or highly degraded woodland patches, requiring continuous tracts of high-quality forest.

Feeding: Classified as a specialized insectivore whose diet consists almost exclusively of ants and termites, including their eggs, larvae, and pupae. It searches for these prey items by excavating soft, decaying wood on tree trunks and larger branches. Additionally, it consumes wood-boring beetle larvae and occasionally supplements its nutrient intake with wild fruits and tree sap obtained by pecking small wells in active bark.

Behavior: Notably secretive, quiet, and far more difficult to locate than most other sympatric woodpeckers. It typically ranges through the mid-story and canopy levels, foraging either singly or in pairs with deliberate, slow movements. Its drumming is remarkably soft, short, and low in intensity, used primarily for short-range territorial communication. Its visual mimicry of larger woodpeckers is a fascinating behavioral shield, allowing it to forage in close proximity to aggressive dominant species without triggering territorial attacks.

Nesting: Breeding activity takes place during the austral spring, typically from September to December. Breeding pairs cooperate closely to excavate a deep nesting cavity in dead or dying tree trunks, usually positioned at heights ranging from 4 to 15 meters above the forest floor. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 3 glossy white eggs. Incubation is shared by both parents and lasts for about 15 to 18 days, after which both adults provision the altricial chicks with regurgitated insects until they fledge.

Conservation status: Listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, with several regional classifications designating it as endangered or critically endangered. The primary threat to its survival is the historical and ongoing destruction, degradation, and severe fragmentation of the Atlantic Forest. The expansion of agricultural frontiers, livestock farming, and commercial timber plantations has significantly depleted the old-growth forest stands that this species relies on for nesting and foraging.
