Description


It is one of the largest rodents in the world and one of the most influential mammals in North American freshwater ecosystems. Its body is robust and covered with a dense, waterproof fur that provides excellent insulation in cold environments. The head is broad, with relatively small eyes and ears, while the continuously growing orange incisors are highly specialized for cutting wood. One of its most distinctive features is the broad, flattened, scaly tail, which serves as a rudder while swimming, provides support on land, and functions as a warning device when slapped against the water surface. The hind feet are large and webbed, enhancing swimming efficiency, whereas the forefeet are adapted for digging and manipulating objects. Adults may exceed 20 kg in weight and reach over one meter in total length.

Geographic Distribution: Castor canadensis is native to much of North America, historically ranging from Alaska and Canada through large portions of the United States and into northern Mexico. Conservation and reintroduction programs have helped many populations recover following centuries of intense fur harvesting. The species has also been introduced beyond its native range, most notably in southern South America, where established populations occur in Tierra del Fuego. Today it occupies numerous watersheds throughout its distribution.

Habitat: This species inhabits rivers, streams, ponds, lakes, wetlands, and other freshwater environments associated with woody vegetation. It typically favors areas containing abundant trees and shrubs near water, particularly willows, poplars, and other riparian plants. It is renowned for its ability to modify landscapes through the construction of dams and lodges, structures that alter water flow and create habitats used by many other organisms. These engineering activities can transform small waterways into complex wetland systems with high biological diversity.

Diet: It is a specialized herbivore that feeds on bark, branches, leaves, shoots, roots, and aquatic vegetation. During warmer months, herbaceous and aquatic plants form a larger proportion of the diet, whereas woody materials become more important during winter. Although it cuts down trees for both food and construction purposes, it generally selects plant species according to nutritional value and local availability. Its powerful incisors enable it to fell surprisingly large trees in relatively short periods of time.

Behavior: The species is primarily crepuscular and nocturnal, carrying out most activities during periods of reduced light. It lives in stable family groups, typically consisting of a breeding pair and offspring from multiple years. Cooperation among family members is essential for maintaining dams, burrows, and lodges. Communication involves scent marking, vocalizations, and tail slapping. It is an excellent swimmer and can remain underwater for several minutes due to physiological adaptations that improve oxygen conservation.

Reproduction: Breeding generally occurs once each year. After a gestation period of approximately three months, the female gives birth to one or more young inside a protected lodge or burrow. Newborns are born fully furred, with open eyes and a relatively advanced level of development compared to many other rodents. Both parents participate in parental care, and older siblings often assist in protecting and caring for younger offspring. This cooperative family structure facilitates the transmission of survival skills and construction behaviors.

Conservation Status: Globally, the species is classified as Least Concern (LC) due to its broad distribution and the recovery of many populations after historical overexploitation by the fur trade. Nevertheless, some local populations may be affected by wetland degradation, watercourse alteration, and conflicts associated with their ecosystem-engineering activities. In regions where it has been introduced outside its native range, it can cause significant ecological impacts on native habitats, making management strategies necessary in certain areas.
