Description

Characterized by an oval and highly convex body typical of chrysomelid beetles, this taxon measures approximately 6 to 9 millimeters in length. Its elytral background is a distinctive creamy white or pale yellow, adorned with an intricate pattern of dark metallic green or black spots and longitudinal lines resembling calligraphic characters. The pronotum is predominantly a lustrous metallic green with bronze reflections, while the legs and antennae show reddish-brown or dark coloration. The head is partially retracted into the prothorax, hosting prominent compound eyes.

Geographical distribution: Primarily occurs in the southern cone of South America. Its presence is widely recorded in Argentina (specifically the northern and central provinces), Brazil (southern and southeastern regions), Paraguay, and Uruguay. It populates temperate and subtropical zones where its specific host plants are abundant.

Habitat: Prefers humid grasslands, forest edges, roadsides, agricultural fields, and riparian scrublands. It is closely associated with microhabitats exposed to direct sunlight, where dense herbaceous vegetation offers shelter and sufficient food sources for the development of stable colonies.

Feeding: Exhibits strictly phytophagous habits during both larval and adult stages. It shows a strong preference for host plants belonging to the family Malvaceae, especially within the genus Sida (popularly known as mallows). These insects feed by chewing on leaves, consuming the foliar tissue between veins and sometimes causing localized defoliation on host plants.

Behavior: Displays primarily diurnal activity, with peak locomotion and feeding during the warmest hours of spring and summer days. When confronted by a threat, it utilizes a defense mechanism called thanatosis (feigning death), folding its legs and antennae flat against its body and dropping to the ground. Although capable of flight, its movements are typically slow and localized, relying mostly on walking across leaf surfaces.

Reproduction: Begins its reproductive cycle with courtship and mating in early spring. Females deposit small clusters of yellowish or orange eggs on the underside of host leaves, shielding them from direct sunlight and potential predators. Upon hatching, the grub-like, dark-colored larvae feed voraciously on the foliage. Once they complete their larval instars, they migrate downward to burrow into the soil, where they undergo pupation before emerging as fully formed adults.

Conservation status: Has not been evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Its wild populations are considered stable across its native range, benefited by the abundance of its host plants in both natural ecosystems and disturbed agricultural landscapes of South America.
