Characterized by a small, compact shorebird morphology, this species exhibits a body length of 13 to 15 centimeters, a wingspan of 34 to 37 centimeters, and an average weight ranging between 20 and 45 grams. It features a short, stout, and straight black bill that displays a very subtle swelling at its tip. Its legs are blackish and possess characteristic partial webbing between the toes, known as semipalmation, which is a key diagnostic feature within the genus Calidris. In breeding plumage, the upperparts display a cryptic, variegated pattern of grayish-brown and black feathers with pale fringes, complemented by a white belly and a breast adorned with fine dark streaks. Conversely, the non-breeding plumage is far more uniform, characterized by ash-gray upperparts and completely white underparts, with the breast streaking fading almost entirely.
Geographical distribution: Undertakes an extraordinary, long-distance migratory journey twice a year. Its breeding grounds are situated in the arctic and subarctic tundra of North America, extending from western Alaska across northern Canada to regions like Nunavut and Labrador. During the post-breeding migration, massive flocks travel along the western Atlantic and interior flyways, utilizing critical stopover sites such as the Bay of Fundy and Delaware Bay to build up vital fat reserves. The wintering range is extensive, primarily encompassing the northern and eastern coasts of South America, including significant concentrations in Venezuela, the Guianas, and northern Brazil, with smaller numbers scattered along the Caribbean islands and further south.
Habitat: Strongly associated with coastal and wet habitats depending on the phase of its life cycle. In its northern nesting territories, it occupies the wet tundra, showing a clear preference for low-lying areas near freshwater ponds, sedge meadows, and bogs. Throughout the migration and wintering phases, its habitat shifts entirely to marine and estuarine environments. It is highly abundant on intertidal mudflats, estuarine bays, sandy coastlines, salt pans, and brackish coastal lagoons where low tides expose extensive mud surfaces rich in microscopic life.
Feeding: Primarily carnivorous, focusing its foraging efforts on a wide array of small invertebrates. In its Arctic nesting grounds, the diet consists mostly of aquatic insects, dipteran larvae, and spiders. In stark contrast, during migration and throughout the winter, it depends heavily on benthic organisms. Its primary prey at major Atlantic stopovers is the small amphipod Corophium volutator, though it also consumes polychaetes, tiny marine snails, and small bivalve mollusks. It employs a rapid, energetic foraging style, constantly walking and probing the mud or picking prey directly from the surface using rapid tactile and visual cues.
Behavior: Highly gregarious outside the breeding season, forming massive, dense flocks that can number in the tens of thousands of individuals. These flocks perform spectacular, synchronized aerial maneuvers, twisting and turning in unison to confuse aerial predators like peregrine falcons. Its activity patterns are heavily dictated by tidal cycles; during high tide, individuals roost in large communal groups on sandy beaches or salt marshes, whereas during low tide, they rapidly disperse across the mudflats to feed aggressively both day and night.
Nesting: Commences soon after arrival on the breeding grounds in late May or early June. It is a monogamous species, displaying high site fidelity by returning to the same nesting territories year after year. The nest is a shallow scrape on the ground, often hidden beneath tundra vegetation or dwarf shrubs, lined with dried leaves and grasses. The clutch typically contains four eggs, olive to buff-colored, densely marked with brown blotches. Both parents share incubation duties for a period of 18 to 22 days. The precocial chicks leave the nest only hours after hatching to forage independently. Often, the female abandons the brood before the young fledge, leaving the male to defend them until they can fly, which occurs at about 14 to 19 days of age.
Conservation status: Classified as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List. This status reflects a steep and concerning population decline observed over recent decades across several migratory flyways. The species faces multiple cumulative threats, including the loss and degradation of critical stopover habitats due to coastal development, industrial pollution, pesticide runoff, and the global effects of climate change, which threaten to alter the timing of insect emergence in the Arctic and cause sea-level rise in coastal foraging zones.
