This is the smallest shorebird species in the world, characterized by a diminutive body length ranging from 11 to 15 centimeters, a wingspan of 27 to 32 centimeters, and an extremely light body mass of only 17 to 30 grams. The most reliable diagnostic feature for field identification is the coloration of its legs, which are yellowish to pale greenish, distinguishing it instantly from other small sandpipers that possess dark legs. Its bill is short, thin, and slightly decurved at the tip, showing a dark black color. During the breeding season, the dorsal plumage exhibits an intricate pattern of feathers with dark brown to black centers and warm rufous and buff margins, while the breast is heavily streaked with brown and the belly remains pristine white. In its non-breeding plumage, the upperparts fade to a uniform brownish-gray, and the breast becomes a lighter gray with fainter, diffuse streaking.
Geographical distribution: It possesses a vast migratory range that spans across the Americas. During the breeding season, it is found throughout the subarctic and arctic zones of North America, breeding from Alaska across the boreal territories of Canada to Newfoundland. During the post-breeding autumn migration, it travels long distances southward to winter in regions encompassing the southern United States, the Caribbean, Central America, and extensive parts of South America, reaching as far south as central Chile on the Pacific coast and northern Argentina on the Atlantic coast.
Habitat: It utilizes a diverse array of wetland ecosystems throughout its annual cycle. On its northern breeding grounds, it selects wet tundra, Sphagnum bogs, muskegs, and damp openings in coniferous forests. During migration stopovers and on wintering grounds, it shows a strong preference for inland mudflats, the margins of freshwater lakes and ponds, salt marshes, sewage ponds, and flooded agricultural fields. Compared to other small calidrid sandpipers, it is much more tolerant of soft, muddy substrates and emergent vegetation, typically avoiding open, wave-swept sandy beaches.
Feeding: Its diet is predominantly carnivorous, consisting of a wide variety of small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. It actively consumes insect larvae and adults (especially dipterans and beetles), tiny crustaceans such as amphipods, small mollusks, gastropods, and polychaete worms in coastal estuarine environments. In freshwater habitats, it may also occasionally ingest seeds of aquatic plants.
Behavior: It is a highly gregarious species, although it tends to form smaller and more dispersed flocks than other small sandpipers. Its foraging style is characterized by a distinctive hunched posture, moving steadily while picking rapidly from the mud surface or probing shallowly into soft sediments. Its flight is swift, agile, and erratic, displaying a faint white wing bar and white sides of the rump when in flight.
Nesting: Breeding activities commence from late May through June. The species is monogamous and territorial, with males performing aerial displays to defend their nesting sites. The nest is a shallow scrape on the ground, usually well-concealed under low vegetation or dwarf shrubs near water, lined with dead leaves and grasses. The female typically lays a clutch of four eggs, which are olive or pale brown with heavy dark brown spotting. Both parents share incubation duties for approximately 19 to 23 days. The chicks are highly precocial, leaving the nest within hours of hatching to forage independently under parental supervision. The female parent often departs the territory before the chicks fledge, leaving the male to provide the remaining parental care.
Conservation status: It is globally classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although the global population is estimated in the millions, the species is vulnerable to habitat loss and degradation of key migratory stopover sites and wintering wetlands due to agricultural conversion and coastal development, alongside the projected long-term impacts of climate change on its fragile arctic nesting grounds.
