Characterized by its medium size and distinct plumage patterns, this migratory shorebird is notable for its marked sexual size dimorphism, with males being significantly larger and heavier than females. It has a total length of 7.5 to 9.5 inches (19 to 24 centimeters), a wingspan of 15 to 18 inches (38 to 45 centimeters), and weights ranging between 1.8 and 3.7 ounces (50 to 105 grams). The most diagnostic plumage feature is a densely streaked, brownish-gray breast bib that ends abruptly in a sharp, clean horizontal line against a stark white belly. The upperparts are intricately patterned with black, brown, and warm buff feather edges, creating a distinct scaly look. The bill is medium-sized, slightly decurved at the tip, showing a dark color with a pale yellowish or greenish-yellow base, while the legs are dull yellow to olive-green, which helps distinguish it from other similar calidrids.
Geographical distribution: This species undertakes an extraordinary long-distance migration across hemispheres. Its breeding grounds are situated in the high Arctic tundra, stretching from northern Siberia in Russia through northern Alaska in the United States and the northern territories of Canada. During the post-breeding season, it travels immense distances southward to winter mainly in South America, where it spreads throughout Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, and southern Brazil, with some individuals reaching the Andes of Chile. Small populations also winter in Australia and New Zealand, and the species is recorded as a regular vagrant in western Europe during autumn migration.
Habitat: During the breeding season, it is strictly associated with wet, low-lying Arctic tundra, preferring sedge meadows, marshy areas, and damp depressions near pools. Throughout migration and on the wintering grounds, it shows a strong preference for freshwater wetlands rather than open marine coastlines. Typical habitats include muddy margins of ponds, flooded pastures, rice fields, marshes, estuaries, and grassy wet meadows, where tall or sparse vegetation provides excellent camouflage and protection from aerial predators.
Feeding: Its diet is predominantly insectivorous. It feeds heavily on dipteran larvae, beetles, spiders, amphipods, aquatic insects, and small crustaceans. When foraging in agricultural or brackish areas, it may also consume seeds of aquatic plants and small mollusks. It searches for prey by walking methodically through mud or short grass, probing its bill deeply and rapidly into the substrate in a characteristic sewing-machine motion, relying on both tactile and visual cues to locate food items.
Behavior: It is a relatively quiet and inconspicuous shorebird, often relying on its cryptic dorsal coloration to blend seamlessly with dry marsh grasses. Unlike many other sandpipers, it typically associates in small, loose groups rather than tight, massive flocks, although larger aggregations can form at key migratory stopover sites. During the breeding season, males establish territories and perform spectacular courtship displays. They inflate their esophageal air sacs to produce hollow, resonant, booming calls while performing slow, low-altitude flights over the nesting grounds to attract females.
Nesting: The mating system is polygynous, with dominant males defending territories and mating with multiple females. The nest is a shallow scrape on the ground, carefully concealed within dense clumps of grass or dwarf shrubs and lined with dry leaves, grasses, and lichens. The female lays a clutch of 4 eggs, which are olive-buff to greenish-white, heavily splotched with dark brown. The female performs all incubation duties alone for 21 to 23 days and takes sole responsibility for raising the precocial chicks, which leave the nest shortly after hatching to forage independently.
Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although it remains abundant with a vast global range, monitoring programs indicate a declining population trend. Major threats include the degradation of crucial stopover wetlands due to agricultural conversion and urban development, alongside the rapidly changing conditions of its Arctic breeding grounds driven by global warming, which alters the timing of insect emergence and nesting habitats.
