Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a large, heavily built member of the waterfowl family characterized by a highly pronounced sexual dimorphism in body mass. Wild males of Cairina moschata are significantly larger than females, measuring up to 34 inches (86 cm) in length and weighing around 9 pounds (4 kg), whereas females are roughly half that size. The plumage of wild individuals is predominantly glossy black with prominent green and purple iridescent sheen, contrasted by conspicuous white wing patches on the coverts, which are highly visible during flight. Adult birds, particularly males, possess distinctive, unfeathered fleshy caruncles in shades of dark red and blackish-gray surrounding the base of the bill, giving them a unique, rugged facial profile. The legs and webbed feet are dark, equipped with strong claws adapted for gripping tree branches.

Geographical distribution: The native range of this species extends across the Neotropical region, from the Rio Grande Valley in southern Texas and the coastal lowlands of Mexico, continuing throughout Central America, and extending south into South America as far as northern Argentina and Uruguay.

Habitat: This bird is strongly associated with forested freshwater ecosystems, showing a marked preference for forested swamps, slow-moving rivers, flooded savannas, marshes, and coastal mangroves. It requires habitats with dense canopy cover and mature trees near water bodies, which provide both safety from terrestrial predators and suitable nesting locations.

Feeding: It exhibits an opportunistic omnivorous diet, consuming a diverse array of plant and animal matter. Its plant-based diet includes aquatic seeds, roots, tubers, leaves, and agricultural grains found near wetland edges. This is balanced by preying on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, including insects and their larvae, snails, crabs, small fish, and occasionally tiny amphibians like frogs and tadpoles, which it captures by dabbling in shallow mud or grazing on land.

Behavior: Primarily active during crepuscular hours, this species spends much of its day foraging or roosting high in the forest canopy. It is notably arboreal compared to most other ducks, relying on tall trees for nocturnal roosting to avoid ground predators. It typically forms small social groups or lives in pairs. Unlike typical quacking waterfowl, it is remarkably quiet; males produce a low, breathy hissing sound as a display, while females emit a soft, low-pitched quack only when threatened.

Nesting: Breeding activity is closely tied to the onset of local rainy seasons. The preferred nest site is located in natural cavities of mature trees, typically ranging from 10 to 50 feet (3 to 15 meters) above the ground. If tree cavities are scarce, it may build a nest in dense, tall ground vegetation or utilize abandoned nests of larger birds. The female lines the chosen cavity with soft down feathers plucked from her breast and lays a clutch of 8 to 15 greenish-white eggs. Incubation is performed solely by the female and lasts for approximately 35 days, which is exceptionally long for waterfowl of this size.

Conservation status: It is currently categorized as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its vast geographical distribution. However, wild populations face localized threats due to deforestation, wetland drainage, and excessive hunting pressure. Furthermore, a major ecological concern is genetic pollution resulting from hybridization with escaped domestic individuals, which threatens the genetic integrity of pure wild lineages.
