Broad-winged Hawk

This is a compact, medium-sized raptor characterized by its broad wings, short tail, and stocky silhouette. It reaches a total body length of 13.4 to 17.7 inches, with a wingspan ranging from 29.1 to 39.4 inches and a weight between 9.3 and 19.8 ounces, with females exhibiting reverse sexual size dimorphism by being larger than males. Adults display a dark, sooty-brown dorsal surface, contrasting with white underparts heavily barred with reddish-brown markings. The most reliable field mark is the tail, which features prominent, equal-width alternating bands of black and white. Under flight, the underwings appear pale whitish with a distinct dark border along the trailing edge. Juveniles present longitudinal brown streaks on their chest and lack the stark white band on the tail.

Geographical distribution: It breeds extensively across the eastern half of North America, from southern Canada through the eastern United States. As a highly migratory species, it travels vast distances during the autumn. Its wintering range spans from southern Florida and the Caribbean islands, south through Central America, and into northwestern South America, where it settles primarily along the slopes of the Andean mountains and the western periphery of the Amazon basin in countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

Habitat: During the breeding season, it occupies large, continuous tracts of deciduous or mixed forests, showing a strong preference for nesting sites near water bodies, wetlands, or forest clearings. During migration, it can be observed in a wide range of open and semi-open landscapes. Upon reaching its neotropical wintering grounds, it adapts to humid premontane forests, shade-grown coffee plantations, tropical rainforest margins, and foothills, ranging from sea level up to elevations exceeding 6,500 feet.

Feeding: This bird of prey operates as an opportunistic perch hunter. It sits quietly on lower branches of the forest canopy, scanning the ground below before dropping swiftly to capture its prey. Its varied diet consists of small mammals (including voles, mice, and shrews), anfhibians (frogs and toads), reptiles (small snakes and lizards), large invertebrates (such as grasshoppers, beetles, and caterpillars), and occasionally nestlings of other avian species.

Behavior: It is a solitary and highly territorial raptor while nesting, actively defending its territory against intruders. However, it is renowned for its highly social behavior during migration. In the fall, individuals congregate by the tens of thousands in spectacular swirling flocks known as "kettles". These massive groups utilize thermal updrafts to glide long distances with minimal energy expenditure, creating a renowned spectacle at migration bottlenecks along the Gulf Coast and Central America.

Nesting: Monogamous pairs form shortly after arriving on their breeding grounds in the spring. Together they construct a relatively small, flimsy platform nest of dead sticks, lining it with bark strips, fresh green leaves, and pine needles, typically positioned in the crotch of a mature deciduous tree 20 to 40 feet above the ground. The clutch consists of 1 to 4 eggs that are creamy white and blotched with brown. The female performs the majority of the incubation for about 31 days, while the male provides food. The young fledge approximately 5 to 6 weeks after hatching.

Conservation status: It is evaluated as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, owing to its extremely large range and stable population size. Nevertheless, local populations face potential threats from forest fragmentation in North America, which increases nest exposure to predators, and rapid deforestation in their tropical wintering habitats, alongside the hazards of chemical pesticide accumulation and collisions during migration.
