This is a small, compact psittacid species measuring approximately 17 to 18 centimeters in total length and weighing between 53 and 65 grams. Its plumage is predominantly a vibrant bright green, characterized by a diagnostic, small orange patch on the chin, located immediately beneath the lower mandible. The lesser underwing coverts and shoulder feathers display a distinct bronze-brown or olive-brown coloration, creating a prominent contrast against the green background during flight, while the primary flight feathers show elegant shades of turquoise-blue and bright yellow underwing linings. The strong, hooked bill is horn-colored or dull ivory, while the bare skin of the orbital ring is pale white, encircling a dark brown iris. The tail is short and sharply pointed, which constitutes a key anatomical feature distinguishing it from other closely related parakeets.
Geographical distribution: This bird is native to the Pacific slope of the Neotropics, ranging from southern Mexico (specifically the states of Chiapas and Oaxaca) down through Central America, including countries such as Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Its range extends further south into northern South America, where it occupies the lowlands of northern Colombia (especially the Caribbean coastal plains and the valleys of the Magdalena and Cauca rivers) and the northwestern regions of Venezuela (surrounding the Maracaibo basin).
Habitat: This adaptable species occurs mostly in lowlands and lower premontane zones, ranging from sea level up to 1200 meters above sea level. It prefers deciduous dry forests, gallery forests, humid forest edges, wooded savannas, scrublands, and secondary growth areas. Due to its remarkable ecological resilience, it regularly exploits human-modified environments, becoming highly abundant in urban parks, suburban residential gardens, agricultural fields, and fruit orchards where food resources are abundant throughout the year.
Feeding: It has an omnivorous and mainly phytophagous diet, feeding on a wide variety of seeds, wild fruits, flowers, and nectar. It shows a marked preference for the fruits of wild figs (Ficus species) and the seeds of trees belonging to the Leguminosae and Bombacaceae families. During the breeding season, it supplements its nutritional intake by consuming young leaf buds and occasionally small insects to meet its protein requirements. The species is also known to practice geophagy, visiting clay licks to ingest mineral-rich soil that helps neutralize plant toxins.
Behavior: Highly social and gregarious, this parakeet is typically seen in noisy, active flocks consisting of 10 to over 100 individuals outside the breeding season. Its flight is exceptionally fast, direct, and characterized by rapid, rhythmic wingbeats accompanied by loud, screeching calls that facilitate contact between group members. During the hottest hours of the day, these birds rest quietly within the upper canopy, where their green coloration provides highly effective crypsis. Breeding pairs exhibit strong monogamous bonds, remaining together for several consecutive seasons or even for life.
Nesting: The breeding season takes place between January and May, corresponding with the regional dry season. It exhibits an extraordinary nesting behavior, frequently excavating its nest chambers inside active arboreal termite nests of the genus Nasutitermes, benefiting from the structural protection and heat regulation provided by these mounds. Alternatively, it may nest in natural hollows of dead trees or abandoned woodpecker cavities. The female lays a clutch of 3 to 6 white, oval eggs, which she incubates alone for approximately 21 to 26 days while the male provides food. Both parents actively share the duties of rearing and feeding the altricial chicks, which fledge and leave the nest cavity after 5 to 6 weeks.
Conservation status: It is currently classified under the Least Concern (LC) category on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although local populations face pressure from habitat destruction and illegal poaching for the domestic and international pet trade, the species remains common and widespread, showing stable population trends thanks to its high adaptability to anthropogenic disturbances and wide geographic distribution.
