Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Belongs to the family Psittacidae and is characterized by a slender, compact silhouette with an overall length of 20 to 24 centimeters and a body mass ranging between 56 and 71 grams. The plumage is predominantly a vibrant bright green, which becomes subtly lighter and more yellowish on the underparts. Its most distinctive and diagnostic anatomical feature is the prominent bright yellow chevron on the leading edge of the wing (the primary and outer secondary coverts), highly visible both when perched and during its rapid flight. It features a pale, fleshy-pink or horn-colored bill, a bare, whitish-grey orbital ring surrounding a dark iris, and greyish legs. The undersides of the primary flight feathers display a bluish-green hue, and the tail is moderately long and sharply pointed, aiding in its agile aerial maneuvers.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the interior of South America, with a native range encompassing eastern and central Bolivia, central and southern Brazil (from the states of Maranhão and Ceará southwards to Rio Grande do Sul), the entirety of Paraguay, and northern Argentina (principally in the provinces of Salta, Formosa, Chaco, Corrientes, and Misiones). Furthermore, due to the pet trade and accidental escapes, highly viable feral populations have successfully established themselves in several urban and suburban areas of North America, particularly within the states of California and Florida, as well as in major metropolitan areas outside its historical range such as Rio de Janeiro.

Habitat: Inhabits a diverse array of lowland environments, showing a clear preference for semi-deciduous forests, open woodlands, shrubby savannas of the Cerrado, xerophytic formations of the Caatinga, gallery forests, and seasonal wetlands of the Chaco. This taxon possesses remarkable ecological plasticity, allowing it to easily colonize anthropogenically modified landscapes, including agricultural orchards, urban parks, suburban gardens, and residential areas, provided there is a continuous availability of food sources and suitable structures for roosting and breeding.

Feeding: Exhibits a highly vegetarian diet, characterized by opportunistic frugivorous, granivorous, and nectarivorous behaviors that shift according to seasonal resource abundance. It consumes a wide variety of seeds and wild fruits, displaying a strong preference for the oily fruits of native palms such as Attalea and Syagrus genera, wild figs from the Ficus genus, and various melastome berries. Additionally, it frequently visits flowering trees, such as those of the genus Erythrina, to feed on nectar and pollen, acting as an occasional pollinator, and supplements its nutritional intake with tender leaf buds and small insects during the peak breeding season.

Behavior: Constitutes a highly gregarious, noisy, and social species that travels and feeds in tightly knit flocks typically consisting of 10 to 30 individuals, though these aggregations can swell to over a hundred birds at communal roosting sites during the non-breeding season. Its flight is remarkably swift, direct, and erratic, characterized by continuous, high-pitched screeching calls that maintain flock cohesion. It demonstrates exceptional acrobatic agility while foraging in the canopy, often utilizing its hooked bill as a third limb to climb branches, and frequently engages in mutual allopreening to reinforce lifelong monogamous pair bonds.

Nesting: Occurs on a seasonal basis, typically coinciding with the spring and summer months of the Southern Hemisphere. This cavity-nesting bird utilizes natural hollows in decaying tree trunks, hollow palm stumps, or, very frequently, actively excavates chambers inside the arboreal nests of active termite mounds (genus Nasutitermes), benefiting from the stable microclimate and protection they offer. The female lays a clutch of 3 to 5 white, elliptical eggs, which she incubates exclusively for approximately 24 to 26 days, during which time the male is solely responsible for bringing food. The altricial chicks are born blind and featherless, receiving regurgitated food from both parents until they fledge at approximately 5 to 6 weeks of age.

Conservation status: Classified under the category of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. While it faces localized threats from habitat fragmentation due to agricultural expansion and ongoing capture for the pet trade, its global populations are considered stable and expanding. The species´ outstanding ability to exploit human-modified urban and suburban habitats has allowed it to mitigate regional pressures and thrive across its current distribution.
