Characterized by its robust build and impressive size, this Neotropical tree frog exhibits a snout-vent length ranging from 80 to 100 millimeters in males, while females are slightly larger, reaching up to 105 millimeters. Its dorsal coloration is highly polymorphic, varying from yellowish-brown to pale gray or coppery, often bisected by a distinct dark vertebral stripe running from the snout to the posterior region. The eyes are prominent with a horizontal pupil and a striking bronze iris. Its limbs are long, bearing extensively developed adhesive toe discs designed for vertical climbing, alongside well-defined webbing on the hind feet. The dorsal skin is smooth, whereas the venter displays a granulated texture in shades of cream or off-white.
Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across eastern South America. Its range encompasses eastern and southern Brazil, spanning from the state of Bahia southwards to Rio Grande do Sul, as well as eastern Paraguay and the Misiones province in northeastern Argentina.
Habitat: It primarily inhabits the humid subtropical and tropical forests of the Atlantic Forest biome. Nevertheless, it exhibits high ecological tolerance, frequently colonizing secondary forests, forest edges, agricultural landscapes, pasture ponds, and suburban areas, provided there are slow-flowing or standing bodies of water available.
Feeding: It is an opportunistic, generalist nocturnal predator. Its diet consists mainly of a wide variety of terrestrial arthropods, including beetles, spiders, crickets, moths, and ants. Due to its substantial size, adult individuals occasionally prey upon small vertebrates, such as smaller frog species.
Behavior: Strictly nocturnal and arboreal, this species spends daylight hours concealed within high foliage, hollow trees, or bromeliads to prevent water loss. During the breeding season, males display high territoriality and emit a powerful metallic call resembling a metal hammer striking an anvil. This acoustic signal serves both to attract receptive females and to establish territorial boundaries, which can lead to aggressive physical combat between competing males if borders are violated.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle is remarkably complex, characterized by elaborate bio-engineering. The male constructs a circular mud basin or depression along the shallow margins of ponds, using its snout and limbs to shape the mud walls. This crater-like nest acts as a protective barrier against aquatic predators such as predatory insects and fish. The female deposits a clutch of up to 3,000 eggs that float on the water surface within this safe enclosure. The tadpoles hatch and spend their initial developmental stages inside the mud nest until heavy rainfall floods the basin, washing them into the larger pond where they complete their metamorphosis.
Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although overall populations remain stable and adaptive to modified habitats, localized threats persist, primarily driven by deforestation, habitat fragmentation of the Atlantic Forest, and chemical pollution of freshwater bodies.
