Description


This is the largest cervid in South America, distinguished by its robust posture and remarkable morphological adaptations to aquatic environments. Adults typically stand between 1.10 and 1.30 meters tall at the shoulder and weigh from 100 to 150 kilograms. Their dense coat displays a bright reddish-brown hue during the summer, shifting to a duller, darker brown in the winter. Notably, their long and sturdy limbs feature a distinctive black coloration on the lower sections, resembling dark stockings, with a similar black patch present on the muzzle. The ears are exceptionally large, lined internally with thick white fur. Males develop heavy, bifurcated antlers that can reach lengths of 50 to 60 centimeters, showing complex branching patterns. Among their most specialized adaptations are their wide, splayed hooves connected by an elastic interdigital membrane, which effectively distributes weight and prevents the animal from sinking into soft mud.

Geographical distribution: Populations are found in highly fragmented pockets across central and northern Argentina, western and southern Brazil, eastern Bolivia, southeastern Peru (strictly confined to the Pampas del Heath), and various regions of Paraguay. Historically, its range extended extensively throughout the Río de la Plata basin and the Brazilian Cerrado. However, anthropogenic pressure has confined the remaining populations to specific wetlands, with the Brazilian Pantanal and the Iberá Wetlands in Argentina serving as their primary modern strongholds.

Habitat: This specialist is strictly associated with wet ecosystems and alluvial plains. It prefers swamps, marshes, lagoons, and seasonal or permanent floodplains where water depth does not exceed 60 to 80 centimeters, allowing for comfortable movement. The species avoids dense upland forests, though it frequently utilizes gallery forests or riparian shrublands as thermal shelter and protection against predators during extreme seasonal flood events.

Feeding: The diet is entirely herbivorous and highly selective, classifying it as a browser of hydrophilic vegetation. It feeds on a diverse array of aquatic and semi-aquatic plants, including genera such as Nymphaea, Pontederia, and Eichhornia, alongside tender shoots of grasses and sedges growing along water margins. During high-water seasons, it incorporates the leaves and twigs of moisture-tolerant shrubs. Its digestive tract is specialized to process vegetation with a high water content and soluble fiber, prioritizing the most nutritious and tender portions available.

Behavior: Crepuscular and nocturnal habits characterize this mammal, which remains concealed within dense marsh vegetation during peak daylight hours. It is primarily a solitary animal, though it is common to observe females accompanied by their offspring or small family groups of two to five individuals without forming cohesive herds. It is an exceptional swimmer, capable of crossing deep, wide rivers with ease to escape predators or seek new foraging grounds. While not strictly territorial, individuals maintain well-defined home ranges that may partially overlap.

Reproduction: Breeding activity lacks rigid seasonality throughout its range, although a distinct peak in births occurs during the dry season, typically between October and November. Following an extended gestation period of approximately 270 days, females give birth to a single fawn. Unlike many other deer species, the offspring are born with a uniform coat lacking white spots. The fawn is kept hidden in dense reedbeds and tall grasses for the first few weeks of life, with the mother returning periodically to nurse until weaning is completed around six months of age.

Conservation status: Classified globally as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The primary drivers threatening its long-term survival include habitat loss and degradation driven by wetland drainage for agriculture and cattle ranching, the construction of hydroelectric dams that disrupt hydrological cycles, poaching, and disease transmission from domestic livestock sharing its pasturelands.
